hey Rian why don't you run for governor when Bob Ferguson becomes president? you explaining this initiative to people is easy listening, and that's hard to do. Think about it!

I bet everything contact sports is a big driver of all kinds of health disparity in this country. You can compare lifespans and achievement in groups of population, but you can't compare quality of life as defined by the amount of love you have to give and the amount of stress in your thought.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 17h
how many years does contact sports add to that lifespan difference? There is a number for that, I bet. What there isn't a number for is the loss in quality of life that comes from loss of capacity of brain function that results in loss of capacity of emotion and an increase in stress in thought.

I’m a middle of the road, old white woman (recently converted to being a Democrat) and I’m voting for you. Just want you to know I like your fire. And it’s not just voting against that rubber stamp Republican (Moody), it about what you are for too…helping the people.

That's good for families with a son or daughter who get rear-ended while waiting at a red light, and it's good for families with a parent who takes a fall, and it's good for brothers and sisters who were attacked by a gang and kicked in the face. They can all get their love back, you feel me?

it appears to be an injury in the same way arterial sclerosis is an injury. that injury reduces the amount of cerebrospinal fluid getting to the brain. that kind of plaque is produced after any head impact. it leads to PTSD, dementia and early death, some by suicide. It can be treated today. 2/3

wow you're honest...I love that!! if you were President Trump, you would have lied about the number of people who were there. you keep it 100. hey Angie some sports change lives and families and kids and achievement and love and happiness. well, that now appears to be treatable injury. 1/2

nice job, for sure. But Oakland is first to eliminate the availability of football. Skyline High School just did it. That principal did it. That's smart. It protects kids. It's a change you could make for Seattle overnight. ngl, the good you will do is incalculable. be second yo! haha

Sure, therapy gives people ideas, but it has no chance of treating any physical injury or process. people know therapy can't help a broken arm, kidney stone or gout, but somehow they believe it might help with how they feel or what they think. (How much we feel is a circulatory issue.)
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
therapy won't help because thought and emotion are anatomy and physiology. they are physical not metaphysical. therapy won't prevent suicide because suicide is a physical process and product. (It presents a buildup of stress hormone in csf, an orthopedic injury to capacity of brain function.)

Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
You can't prevent suicide by hiding guns like you can prevent being in a car accident by not getting in a car. Suicides occurred before guns were invented. And thought of suicide as a product of the brain is predictable.

hi Jane can I share the opinion that this being football you're writing about, that is an unfortunate choice of words. Also, your story isn't LT in 2004. Your story is the end of football at Skyline High School in Oakland. That is a very big story. That is evidence of an awakening.

not a great idea to promote and romanticize an activity that closes off brain function, even if it can be treated today. I didn't see this movie and I won't see this movie.

Without that kind of injury, domestic violence isn't in the realm of possibility. So if a group like yours needs a force multiplier, it would be to do whatever you can to eliminate brain impacts in school sports. The good you will do is incalculable.
010
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
What I'm saying is the injury that hurts people after brain impact underlies all violence. And if that occurs as a young person or young adult in a con sport, it sets up a future that includes the possibility of domestic violence in a family or couple and between friends and strangers.
100
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Contact sports are domestic violence. Being struck in the brain for any reason is violence. It is against instinct to allow it to happen. Can parents who let kids play contact sports be charged with reckless endangerment? how about teachers and doctors? what, not if it's part of the culture??

hey make sure they talk about having empathy for others and how that translates to policy. All snaps and hyperbole aside, one party backs policies with more empathy for others and the environment. Keep it simple.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
please don't joke around about brain injury because any hit to the brain and you lose ability to laugh, so you wouldn't find that or anything else funny. no lol you feel me
010
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It is innate only in the sense that it is a brain function. Capacity of brain function declines steadily and in bursts after any heavy brain impact event. Once "lost", it can be restored only by restoring flow of cerebrospinal fluid in a procedure that is the brain equivalent of angioplasty.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
no one chooses empathy. that's like saying you can control how fast your bladder fills up. We have to make sure people don't lose emotion as result of loss of capacity of brain function bc it's hard to get back.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
yes, you have a capacity for empathy, but it is not limitless, and it is reduced by a plaque arterial sclerosis (produced as an immune response to impact) that constricts flow of cerebrospinal fluid to the brain.
100
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
no doubt a family accomplishment. nice job. When he gets started, tell him an arterial sclerosis closes off CSF flow to the brain and that it looks like stroke but is not. It is a simple, constrictive plaque produced as the immune response to brain impact.

Ashley Moody voted to end the ACA subsidies. Nearly 300,000 Floridians lost the help they were getting to pay for health insurance. I support bringing those subsidies back and Medicare for All. Nobody should go bankrupt for going to the doctor. #AngieforFlorida

Head impact produces plaque that constricts flow of CSF to the brain, so If 10% of students play sports where contact to the head is routine, then 10% of adults will have more stress and less emotion in thought and behavior. Even as kids, they'll have symptoms of PTSD (which becomes dementia).

you want Friday nights to be safer for families? Do whatever you need to do to change Friday night sports that involve the teenager taking brain impacts collisions to cheers. As the mayor you can do that. People will appreciate you being straight with them, and the good it will do is incalculable

#AngieforFlorida but no for real, tell all families. they will appreciate you bringing it up and being real with it.

call on families to talk with their physician or friend to understand the immediate consequence of a hit to the brain, and to remember the brain is free-floating within the skull, making a helmet or even a car inadequate to protect it from injury. People will appreciate you being honest with them.

Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I don't know what part of cost of health insurance for adults you can attribute to injury to capacity of brain function we take as kids and young adults in youth contact sports, but it's substantial. We wouldn't be sick with "mental illness" if we didn't have the injury that causes it.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
is it possible you have to account for the hit to "mental health" of students who play contact sports in middle and high school to have long-term success at social programs?

Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
@marypeltola.com that said, get a good night sleep, eat right and avoid or minimize alcohol. Without those, every person can be the hardest person of hard people. And again, that is ability, not inability. If you didn't have emotion, you wouldn't have empathy, and you might even change parties.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
@marypeltola.com I just read the piece on you in the NYT. Mary, everyone has a range of emotion unless they don't have much emotion. I'd rather have someone with lots of emotion. It's a strength. it means you are capable. It's fight. does that make sense?
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
put contact sports on the agenda. School boards: immediately discontinue activity that guarantees loss of brain function in your students. You wouldn't offer a class called let's hurt each other or one on how to slam your head against the wall. Why offer an afterschool activity like that?
010
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
ok but it's you bc stress is a SDoH and a symptom of strength of brain and heart function. Low stress means you are in good health and not heading toward dementia. (SDoH wasn't in neurophys 101 in '91-93, but Nedergaard et al, and Yamamoto and Piantino at OHSU hadn't all done their work yet.)
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
maybe any school that offers contact sports should lose accreditation for sponsoring school activities guaranteed to injure students. no federal funding then makes sense. Plus the feds can't match that TV money.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
nice one

Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
To understand how it's used to injure, you have to understand there's physical injury to capacity of brain function and then there's blunt physical injury to the brain. Either one will work, but only injury to capacity goes unnoticed (and is a consequence of sports that are major in our culture).
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I feel you. I'd say even more annoying than the thought about surveillance is just the sound of those goddamn things. and leaf blowers and electric cars too. Get out of my face with anything like that.

health of candidates has to be an issue. athletes are weighed and measured and interviewed and assessed. politicians should be too. I'd say the only qualification should be a minimum level of capacity of brain function to mean easy ability to laugh and cry. (Get JF to Hadjipanayis at UP.)

no one in contact sports is safe, Mayor Bass. if you want to keep LA safe, you certainly can. the good you will do is incalculable.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
and all the other nonsense out there. If you want substance, pass a rule banning contact sports where the head is impacted. Get it on the books for real young kids right now so professional leagues don't come sniffing around, scouting during recess.
000
Meier Lowenthal @meierlowenthal.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Contact sports and other injury at work, home and play, and you have less emotion and more stress in thought, an individual injury to capacity of brain function that affects every family and every community. (They also tax the heart and increase blood pressure, what's up!)

as a precaution for what? Was he taken to a hospital immediately after the play that gave him a concussion or later, after the game?

Death from loss of brain function may well be preventable because the injury causing dementia is physical and can be treated today. If doctors can treat the heart and even replace it, and the brain can be kept wide open and full strength, can we live 500 years?
