Happy weekend! Here’s a 3,500 year-old Minoan clay flask decorated with a wide-eyed octopus! 🐙❤️ From Palaikastro, Crete. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a frontal view of a clay flask with warm-yellow coloured slip with black hand painted decoration depicting an octopus. The octopus is swimming diagonally with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional black painted motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known by scholars as the 'Marine Style'. The flask measures 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) in height. It has a short spout at the top with a small loop handle at either side and a small base so that it can stand upright.

“Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask” (Smart History article “Octopus Vase” by Dr Senta German https://smarthistory.org/octopus-vase/)

The flask was excavated in 1903 at a Bronze Age settlement site at Palaikastro. The excavations between 1902 and 1906, were run by R. Bosanquet and R.M. Dawkins from the British School of Athens. The flask is part of the collections at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete.

As a child I lived for a few years I lived close to the village of Great Missenden. There was a very tall, shabby, creepy man that apparently we used to see around the shops and my mother says she would warn my brothers and I not to go near him. He was Roald Dahl.

a train is going through a tunnel with a brick wall
Alt: A train tunnel is suddenly thrown into perspective when what looks like a giant cat comes out of it... which you then realize is a normal cat coming out of a model railway tunnel.

Edinburgh Castle and Rainbow :) #moody #urbanphotography #photography #edinburgh #scotland
A stunning photograph captures Edinburgh Castle perched atop a rocky crag during golden hour, bathed in warm sunset light that highlights its stone towers and battlements. A vibrant rainbow arcs gracefully across the blue sky directly above the castle, stretching from left to right. In the foreground, narrow cobblestone streets in the Old Town feature old brick and stone buildings with lit street lamps, arched doorways, stairs leading up a hill, bare winter trees, some greenery, and a distant figure in light clothing walking nearby.

A lovely little hedgehog in a basket carved by an Egyptian artisan some 4,300 years ago! 🦔❤️ Detail from a wall relief in the Tomb of Mereruka at Saqqara. 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a carving of a hedgehog in a basket. It comes from a wall relief in the Tomb of Mereruka, Vizier of King Teti, Sixth Dynasty, c. 2330 BC.

The hedgehog is depicted in profile facing right, inside a rectangular basket. It has a long, almost oval shaped body. Its back is filled with short, parallel carved strokes representing densely-packed spines. It has four short legs below its body. Its head is narrow and pointed with a long snout. It has a small circular eye and long ears of a desert hedgehog.

The rectangular basket has patterned edges and looks like woven basketry. It has a long cord on top which is suspended from the arm of an offering bearer. The hedgehog is being presented to the owner of the tomb. This little hedgehog may carry two meanings at once. It is a food offering to provide nourishment for the deceased but it may also represent magical protection for his rebirth.
