If you receive the bogus safety tip to not go shopping alone as a woman and to get a security guard to walk you back to your car, ask if there’s a crime cluster. The answer will be no. @megstoneimpact.bsky.social

True, these are smaller studies. Some with no control group, others qualitative. But research funding is not politically neutral. Some treatments (like CBT) have strong evidence both because their good and because their advocates have access to research funding.

I asked Bessel many times to stop using outdated descriptions of our work and retire references to Model Mugging. He didn’t listen. Much like the women researchers @eminietfeld.bsky.social interviewed for her @motherjones.com piece, Bessel misrepresented our work. www.motherjones.com/media/2024/1...

I agree 100% with your statement, “Trying to like diagnose the problem as like, like, people aren't fighting back enough. That feels like really dangerous.” It is. Which is why every responsible self-defense teacher is vigilant about challenging victim blame.

To be fair, if you’re basing your opinion of self-defense solely on Bessel’s descriptions, it sounds ridiculous. But other sources exist.

Meg Stone @megstoneimpact.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
You’re right a lot of the substitutes for evidence-based therapy he presents in the second half of the book are kooky at best, but I wish you had done a Michael Hobbes-style deep dive before mocking self-defense training.

I resonate with your critiques of cringe-worthy descriptions of patients (except blameless male war veterans!). I presented at Bessel’s conference a few times in the 2010s. More than once overheard his women colleagues’ hushed conversations act misogynistic, inaccurate descriptions of patients.
