It’s the first day of fall and, like clockwork, we are hearing a golden crowned sparrow singing in our yard this morning! They leave in the spring and they return on the first day of autumn each year. What a marvel!

Back to work today after a wonderful, wide-ranging summer break. Visited my erstwhile home in the Caribbean, toured New England with college friends, went camping in the Sierras, watched a lot of soccer, and hiked all over. Settling in this week and look forward to the students returning next week!

Just landed in Sacramento after a nourishing trip around New England with cherished college friends. Decades-long friendships are pretty incredible, as is this gorgeous country in which we get to reside. I do love the Northeast but the West is still the best for me!

Home from a wonderful but bittersweet visit to St. John. Got to see and experience more as a visitor than I ever did as a (young mom, new business owner) resident. Shed tears remembering the life I lived there with my late husband, but also smiled plenty seeing our kids enjoy the island he loved.

Back in the USVI for the first time in over eight years. I loved living here. It’s not “paradise”—so many modern conveniences don’t exist or are unreliable here—but that’s exactly what I miss about it. Well, that and the water, of course. Celebrating Emancipation Day and seeing friends today. 😁🇻🇮

Enjoyed another awesome outing on the new trail in Ukiah’s western hills. The trailhead is just a few blocks from our house—it feels so dreamy to be able to walk out our front door and be hiking in minutes! Huge thanks to the Ukiah Valley Trail Group.

Sometimes I get caught up in busy-ness and can’t see beauty. It’s been like that the past week or so. But this morning my husband came across a screech owlet and I took a walk on my favorite beach, and on my way home I bought locally grown blueberries and locally made cheese and hello again beauty.

In Santa Fe to help my older kid pack up her dorm room after her freshman year at college and got some unexpected free time this evening so took a walk which ended up in a hike up Monte Sol which is the hike I used to do when I went to college here. Phew. Life is so beautiful and surprising.

Finished Tana French’s latest novel last night, the third in her Cal Hooper series. I have loved all of Tana French’s books so far, but her Cal Hooper books hit me deeply and give me much to keep thinking about as a transplant from an anonymous metro area to a small, complicated, rural community.

Drove from Ukiah to Sacramento and went from 68° to 43° in a few minutes when I hit the fog just west of the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 16.

Made it to Santa Fe today to visit our daughter, who is a freshman at St. John’s College. Stopped by my uncle’s old house outside Grants on our way east. Gorgeous skies, stunning landscape, beautiful crisp fall air. I love being back in New Mexico!

Took our 14yo and three of his friends zip lining in the rain in the redwoods today to celebrate his birthday and it was awesome. The teens had a blast and didn’t mind that we tagged along. Coasting through the air, feeling the wonderful rain on my face, gazing out at a gorgeous 2nd growth forest—😁.
