This was the pinnacle of human achievement. Everything has gone downhill since then.
A photo of a brightly colored plastic fish with a working radio inside. The product was available in the 1990s, and billed itself as a waterproof shower radio for kids. It felt incredible as a child to be able to hear music in the bathroom, let me tell you. The mouth switched between AM and FM signals, and there is a large dial in the middle to select the station. The eye of the fish turned it on and controlled the volume.

Alright, it's been a while since we last did a random Magic card. Today we've got Keldon Flamesage, and I've got beef with it. Time for an admission: I don't like to play cards with a lot of text. I think they suck! I like red because it just goes bang, this shit is for blue players.
Magic card called Keldon Flamesage, Costa one red mana and two mana of any color. It's a human shaman creature, with power and toughness 2/3, and the ability text reads: "Enlist

Whenever this creature attacks, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is this creature’s power. You may exile an instant or sorcery card with mana value X or less from among them. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. You may cast the exiled card without paying its mana cost."
The art depicts a woman in red clothing holding a large staff, surrounded by fire.

Hey Elliott, I have a question
A smug white man stands in a field, mountains in the background. He's wearing a baseball hat.

Here are screenshots and the post in alt text, note that screenshots are duplicates in order to fit the alt text in full.
The post reads:
I want to try and describe what it is like in Minnesota right now for my friends in other states. As a reminder, Alyse and I live in the suburbs -- Apple Valley -- not Minneapolis. This federal invasion and occupation is occurring all across the state, not just in Minneapolis.
ICE is not looking for specific people. They don't have a sheet of paper with specific names, specific addresses, that they are arriving in communities to get. They drive around looking for kidnappings of opportunity.
So they will sit and idle in their car, waiting for a Black, brown or Asian person who is walking into the gas station, taking out their trash, walking their dog, or working at their job and then swarm and grab them.
ICE drives around *incredibly recklessly* and uses license plate readers to find people with mostly-Hispanic sounding last names, pulls them over, and kidnaps them. Again, these aren't specific people ICE has been tasked with finding. Most of the people who are kidnapped are U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or have legal status of some sort (work permit, a social security number, or are a refugee or asylee) (picture 1). These are documented immigrants or citizens who have broken no laws -- including not having broken laws entering the country. These are people just going about their daily life who get stopped and snatched because they're Black, brown or Asian.
Just going about OUR daily life, we see abandoned cars in the middle of highways, on neighborhood streets, in front of doctors offices. Sometimes the doors are still open and the car is still running. We could be in line to get Burger King and watch ICE snatch a teenager on his way into work (picture 2). We could be taking out the trash, walking kids to the bus stop, going for a walk outside, and there will all of a sudden be a swarm of anonymous, masked, violent men ripping a family from their home or out of the booth at a restaurant. Picture 3 is a neighborhood, one mile from my house, at 8:30AM this past Wednesday. It was school bus pick up time and also trash day in that neighborhood. This is just in the middle of the neighborhood.
This can happen any where at any time. There is no place we can go and be assured we won't see someone be violently taken. Target. The grocery store. A restaurant. Driving Hattie to swim lessons. Driving to church. Going to the doctor (picture 4). Multiple times a day, we get texts from co-workers, neighbors, friends, family members about a person they know (or are related to, or work with, or are their kids' friends parents) who was taken.
ICE sets up checkpoints in neighborhoods and make everyone leaving or entering show their papers (note: very few people can prove their citizenship at a moments notice. A majority of Minnesotans don't have passports. Citizens don't just carry their birth certificate around). They go door-to-door in apartment buildings and neighborhoods, just hoping a Black, brown or Asian person will open their door (because they have no judicial warrant to take a specific person(s), just kidnapping whoever accidentally opens their door).
Schools have had to close. ICE has shown up to schools and just pepper sprayed kids and parents (picture 5). Districts are calling families and advising that their kids switch to online school. ICE circles and targets Spanish-immersion programs, forcing moms and dads to sit watch over their kids' school to keep their kids and teachers safe (picture 6). Kids come home from school to empty houses, their parents having been stolen sometime during the day. When parents are kidnapped in front of others, they will yell out their full names and the name of their kids' school(s) so someone can call the school and alert the administration, hoping their kids can be put with a safe adult instead of coming home to no one. There are people who signed delegation of parental authority (DOPA) forms -- agreeing to take a neighbor or friend's kids in the event of an emergency -- who now have multiple children from multiple families.
ICE is ubiquitous. They are everywhere. We see them 3, 5, 7 times a day just going through our normal routine. There are more federal agents in Minnesota than there are local law enforcement from the ten largest metro police departments COMBINED (picture 7).
This is going to come to other states and I want people to be prepared, because I cannot overstate how many people have (had to) come together to respond.
Regular Minnesotans -- people who have never once gone to a protest, called their elective representatives, participated in an economic strike, people who rarely even vote have been activated. Grandparents carry whistles in their cars in case they come across ICE while living their lives and need to warn the surrounding area. Parents of kids in K-12 organize to ensure there's parents at bus stops and the area around schools, because ICE stakes out bus stops and school properties -- taking parents who are waiting at the bus stop or in the carpool line (picture 😎. We've set up massive food donation and delivery infrastructure. We organize rides to school and work. People are literally taking in families. SO many kids aren't going to school right now (picture 9). So many businesses are closed or have lost their customer base entirely. So many families are facing eviction because they can't go to work and won't be able to pay their rent.
Minnesotans are being collectively punished and traumatized. 6 month old babies have been teargassed because their parents are just driving in their own neighborhood (picture 10). We are coming together in the most beautiful ways -- I don't want to understate that. But I want everyone outside of Minnesota to understand: we are under a federal invasion and occupation of armed, masked, paramilitary that roam our streets, brutalizing, harassing and murdering with impunity.
There may be people who might think that when this comes to your state, being white or being a U.S. citizen or living in a suburb or rural area or living in a neighborhood with few or no immigrant neighbors means you won't see or experience this kind of daily assault of an invasion and occupation. I want to dispel that idea.
There are things I'm forgetting, certainly, but I wanted to try and paint the picture because this isn't ending in Minnesota. We are the test case before expanding to other states in the country.
Help us now to stop this before it spreads. Organize in your communities now.

Okay so beyond the truly bizarre inclusions in the "timeline" and everything else, this shit is riddled with typos. Like, really? Did someone edit this on their goddamn phone?

Holy shit, I read this in one sitting because I just couldn't stop. I didn't expect to find so much of my own life in it. @keezyyoung.bsky.social made something really, truly beautiful. I'm going to be carrying it around in my soul for a while.

I came across this while shopping for a CPU cooler once and think about it every time my fans kick on.
Question: I have a small cabin in the swamps near Cypress Island, LA. My window AC is not gettin er done. Can I replace it with this thing for a cooler cabin?
Answer: If you are not already bald, you will need to shave your head. Then, apply thermal paste to the top-back of your head, and stick this cooler on it. You will need some duct tape to keep it in place. That way it will help you stay cooler, allowing you to increase the clock speed of your brain in order to do hard mental tasks faster.

Magic card of the day, because I finally remembered. One of the cool things about getting more familiar with Magic has been learning to recognize artists, and when I saw this I thought, "oh that's gotta be Rebecca Guay." I love this art.
Magic card called Vodalian Hypnotist, a merfolk wizard creature. The text reads, "pay two mana and one black mana, tap the card: Target player discards a card. Activate only as a sorcery.

“Deceit is the heart of war.”"
The art depicts a white and orange striped merfolk casting a spell, with lines drawn around one hand to illustrate movement. The merfolk resembles a spined lionfish, with long spines radiating from its head and back.

The world is deeply unpleasant, so let's look at a magic card. Today's card is Champion of Arashin, a hound warrior (and good boy). I like that there's a dragon in the background. Lifelink is cheating.
Magic card named Champion of Arashin, a hound warrior creature. The text reads, "Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.)

“The blood of Dromoka and the blood of my veins are the same.”" The art depicts a humanoid canine with wings charging on a battlefield, with a large dragon breathing fire in the background.

Magic card of the day is Dragon Grip. I haven't seen this one before, but it might be a candidate for some of my dragon edh decks. Love to make a lizard bigger.
Magic card called Dragon Grip. It is an aura enchantment type. The text reads "Ferocious — If you control a creature with power 4 or greater, you may cast Dragon Grip as though it had flash. (You may cast it any time you could cast an instant.)

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and has first strike."
The art depicts a man in a fur lined coat crouching, with one hand engulfed in flames shaped like claws.

Today's card is Forbid. What a surprise, a blue card that counters spells. Someone should do something about this bullshit.
Magic card named Forbid. It is an instant type spell, and the text reads, "Buyback—Discard two cards. (You may discard two cards in addition to any other costs as you cast this spell. If you do, put this card into your hand as it resolves.)

Counter target spell."
The art depicts a blue shirtless man, hair flowing, as he holds a glowing baton.

Today's magic card is appropriate for a Monday - Sleep. I am on record for disliking blue cards, and this is why- when you do things that make it harder for me to play magic, I am not having fun. Blue is the color of malice, of spoiling a good souffle with a handful of salt. Fuck blue.
A magic card called Sleep, a sorcery type. The text reads, "Tap all creatures target player controls. Those creatures don’t untap during that player’s next untap step.

“I give them dreams so wondrous that they hesitate to return to the world of the conscious.”
—Garild, merfolk mage"

The art depicts two humanoid beings and a horse asleep on the ground.

This week has been one and I am behind on the magic cards but today's is a drake! As a noted dragon enthusiast I've been waiting for a wingfriend to show up- Scavenger Drake is a little spendy for the power and toughness but on the right field I could see how this lil guy could get big fast.
Scavenger Drake is a drake creature card, with text reading, "Flying. Whenever another creature dies, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Scavenger Drake.
Dragons consider drakes to be mockeries of their perfection, destroying them on sight."

Today's magic card is Jayemdae Tome, a name that I could neither spell nor pronounce without assistance. It seems like a not great card? Like, drawing an extra card essentially costs 8 mana with this? But this particular version is worth a lot of money? Magic is bad.
Magic card called Jayemdae Tome. You can pay four mana and tap it to draw an extra card. It's an artifact type, and the art is a close view of an open book with unrecognizable text and what looks like either red ribbons or blood coming out of the pages.

Today's random magic card is an old one! Benalish Hero, with art that asks, "what if Pat Benatar was a magic card?" Banding is a wild mechanic, kind of a reverse menace? Have any recent sets had that?
Magic card called Benalish Hero, a human soldier creature card. The text reads, "Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature’s combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it’s being blocked by or is blocking.)

Benalia has a complex caste system that changes with the lunar year. No matter what the season, the only caste that cannot be attained by either heredity or money is that of the hero." The art is a close view of a woman in black leather armor, her brown hair pulled back, and what looks like a shield on one arm.

Oh boy, so today's magic card, Auspicious Starrix, really exemplifies what actually got me into magic in the first place. Where else are you going to find such an incredible collection of interesting artists doing spectacular work? I love this art, and actually the ability is cool too.
Magic card called Auspicious Starrix. The text reads "Mutate, five mana, one green, (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities from under it.)

Whenever this creature mutates, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile X permanent cards, where X is the number of times this creature has mutated. Put those permanent cards onto the battlefield." The art depicts a stylized green elk like creature with four horns and a flowing mane.

Magic card of the day is Boros Reckoner, and this seems like a decent card? Now is time for a Magic Newbie Confession: I still don't understand what first strike means. Somehow I am capable of understanding very complex information but not MTG abilities. This is also why I rarely use planeswalkers.
A magic card named Boros Reckoner, a minotaur wizard creature. The text reads, "Whenever Boros Reckoner is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to any target.

Red or white: Boros Reckoner gains first strike until end of turn."

“Imagine a thunderstorm that’s also a tactical genius. That’s him.”
—Dars Gostok, Firefist captain

That is a good question! This one seems like it has potential, in the right deck?
Card called ISU the Abominable, a legendary snow creature - yeti. The text reads, "You may look at the top card of your library any time.

You may play snow lands and cast snow spells from the top of your library.

Whenever another snow permanent you control enters, you may pay green, white, or blue. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on Isu the Abominable." The art shows a large white creature wielding a sword made of ice, standing on a snow covered mountain.

Today's magic card is Summit Prowler, and I did not know Yeti was a creature type in mtg. I ran a search and there are actually quite a few yeti cards, so that's neat! Now I want to make a cryptids deck.
A magic the gathering card called Summit Prowler. It is a yeti creature card. The texts reads “Do you hunt the yetis of the high peaks, stripling? They are as fierce as the bear that fears no foe and as sly as the mink that creeps unseen. You will be as much prey as they. —Nitula, the Hunt Caller" and the art depicts a tall, snarling creature with white fur and long talons, standing on a snow covered mountain.

Today's magic card of the day (I'm bad at the one-a-day, I know) is Timely Hordemate, which is apparently a human even though the horse is clearly the most striking character in the art. This seems like a kind of mid card, though the ability is kind of neat.
The magic the gathering card named "Timely Hordemate," a human warrior creature type. It has the ability "Raid", which says "When Timely Hordemate enters the battlefield, if you attacked with a creature this turn, return target creature card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield." The card art depicts two armored riders on a large horse, who is leaping free of a large pile of soldiers.

Today's card is Underworld Fires, and actually this is a great card and would be a great way to deal with certain people who love making a bunch of little things (goblins).
Magic the gathering card named Underworld Fires. It is a sorcery card, and deals one damage to each creature and each Planeswalker. If a permanent dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead. The card art shows soldiers on fire in a large cavern, presumably the underworld.

Today's magic card is Bident of Thassa. Bident is a silly word. Kinda neat, actually. Even if it is blue.
Magic the gathering card called "Bident of Thassa." Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, you may draw a card. By paying one blue mana and one mana and tapping, it has "Creatures your opponents control attack this turn if able." The flavor text reads "The wills of mortals shift as the tide ebbs and flows." The card image depicts a two pronged weapon floating over a blue sea, with an island in the background.

In an attempt to know more magic cards, I'm going to start sharing a Magic Card of the Day. Today's card depicts faeries doing.... something with red orbs. Are those their butts? Or like a thorax situation? Why is the one turned to stare at its own ass?
Trading card depicting Scryb Sprites, a creature card, type faerie. It posseses flying ability. The flavor text reads, "The only sound was the gentle clicking of the faeries' wings. Then those intruders who were still standing turned and fled. One thing was certain: they didn't think the Scryb were very funny anymore." The art on the card depicts two bluish winged beings, each sitting on large red orbs and holding smaller red orbs. One is turned around, seemingly looking at the orb on which it sits.
