medievalgill.substack.com/p/speaking-a... On the Substack today. The weird story of the Habsburg prince and his breast-obsessed secretary when they unexpectedly landed in Ireland.
medievalgill.substack.com
“Speaking a little of the country of Ireland”
In June 1518 a storm blew a Habsburg prince into Kinsale. The secretary who came with him left a vivid account of the Irish, and he really, REALLY admired (some of) the women.

Werewolves is it? Irish ones could be chatty and some certainly very much enjoyed being werewolves! And not in a gory way. More in a running around the countryside for the craic kind of way. More here - medievalgill.substack.com/p/werewolves...

Today (16 September) is a feast day (he has four) of an Irish exorcist saint. 16 September commemorates Usaille (Auxilius), an early Irish saint-whose name survives in Killashee, Kildare: Cell Usaille, church of Usaille. And here’s a pic of the old church there.

A bit of a weird one today. The story of a man accusing his stepmother of hiring witches against him in 16th century Ireland. One of my favourite odd stories but, like witchcraft accusations in general, it's not about the divil but about power and ambition and, in this case, a family breakdown. >
