Put the data in storage and you are merely putting the AI to sleep. Assuming it is conscious, which remains to be proven, and assuming it's a morally relevant form of consciousness, ditto.

Reagan won because Carter appointed Paul Volker to the Federal Reserve who engineered a downturn during an election year. Reagan did not reappoint him (in effect). Also the Iranian crisis, profiled breathlessly in the new and innovate ABC show World News Tonight. Also failed hostage rescue.

He supported number 1, but yeah. I think longtermism is a) worth thinking about, but b) do these tech bros really believe it seriously, the expansive version I mean? I enthusiastically support it if it means placing 10,000 year clocks in the desert. Small projects, tiny really. longnow.org/clock/

What did the cavemen who wiped out the Mastodons owe the future (us)? I say: maybe a little, but not enough to justify not driving the Mastodons to extinction. They gained their tribe's survival for another couple of months, we lost the furry elephants but were compensated with vastly better tech.

Probabilism is also a big part of economics and finance for that matter. Not comfortable dismissing it. I googled Brad DeLong and longtermism and got this. Very broadly I have similar sentiments: longtermism isn't great but I think the brickbats are overdone braddelong.substack.com/p/reading-wi...

Agreed, but the philosopher John Serle made short work of that argument in 1980. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese... But yes, since LLMs easily pass Turing test, we can't rule out possibility that they could have some kind of consciousness, albeit a different one. Dubious but not wholly implausible.

I support public health departments controlled at the state, county, and city level, with advice from the CDC. Similarly for education. I don't have a problem with setting standards of excellence. (And when the CDC is corrupted, state and localities pivot away.)

Nick Bostrom did a service c. 2000 IMHO by enumerating the list of existential risks. Good work! But if eg a world shattering disease emerges, you hire someone with relevant domain knowledge not somebody who in the end is a generalist. Same for LLMs. Hire cybersecurity experts. /3

Other than Musk, who is nuts. I did a deeper dive into the the longtermism dissertation & found the argument weakish but reasonable. Sure the stupid version (the very long term is overwhelmingly important) is stupid, but that's not what was argued & I don't know who believes it. More reporting!

Mostly agree. But I don't think that platform could attract a majority of Democratic Senators or a majority of Democratic House members. Maybe the progressive caucus could get behind it. I'm on the left half of the Democratic Party and I wouldn't go for the free stuff w/o means testing FWIW.

This extends even to linguistics: "Liberal" is coded as center-right in much of the OECD world and is coded as center-left in the US (or far-left among the right wing, which we can ignore for now). /3

Some things are more difficult to map. US emphasizes liability via the court system while most OECD countries don't like that sort of lottery & prefer tougher direct regs. On the whole though I think my characterization is accurate: eg the Dems map to Germany's Xtian Democrats or Japan's LibDems.

So we agree in terms of economic policies, healthcare, safety net. Free speech protections: agree: stronger in US, probably for both US parties on the whole pre-2016. Death penalty: Dems more sympathetic to it pre-2016 than most OECD countries. I think group 1 has more salience than group 2&3. /1

Policies in Thatcher's Britain were to the left of those in Carter's America. By high income OECD standards, the Democrats are a center-right party. Just saying. Agree with that sane center-left and sane center-right parties are helpful.
