Olaf Stapledon’s “Last and First Men” imagines humanity’s rise, ruin, and strange rebirth on a mythic scale. Our abridged edition is out tomorrow! Here’s a slightly condensed version of @mdeabaitua.bsky.social's excellent intro:

As Stanislaw Lem notes about JG Ballard, the closer the work comes to the irrational, the more it is coded as art or literary fiction. If Gregor Samsa had been bitten by a radioactive cockroach prior to his morning transformation then Metamorphosis would be science fiction.

Re-reading Pnin in Berlin and came across the line about how Pnin does not believe in an autocratic God but a "democracy of ghosts", and remembered how an AI had used that image in a short story: billions of dollars so that it could pass off fucking Nabokov as its own work.

Enid Bagnold's A Diary Without Dates is a dreamy, sparse, modernist account of her time as a voluntary auxiliary nurse in a hospital during the First World War. Published 1918, its account was so candid she immediately lost her job. Bagnold went onto write National Velvet.
