When a Dem politician says something unkind about GOP voters, it’s a multiday scandal that becomes an indelible cultural reference. When a republican president says everyone in places that didn’t give him their electoral votes should die in nuclear fire, it’s tuesday. bsky.app/profile/atru...

it's so funny that people will always say "Springsteen" when people talk about songwriters on labour, when really so much of his work is about how the most heterosexual man in the world can yearn like a lesbian

Andrea made such a big impression on me when we served on the Polaris Music Prize grand jury in 2013. Funny, insightful, whip-smart with good cheer to burn. Every new book or article from her instantly went on top of my reading list. Gutted, and can only imagine how those who knew her better feel.

The crowd was so loud today. NO ONE is leaving for the George and Max farewells. The boys were bruised and broken and maybe could have done better, but man, Blue Jays baseball is alive and well in Canada.

Cursed Jays season. Came alive in the dog days of summer and made the season fun at the end, but were too banged up and the hole they’d dug was too deep to get out of. Sometimes, you’d squint and see greatness. And others, the good was hard to spot. But it was still grand to cheer for these boys.

Truly, what a gift to have been able to cheer for George Springer and Max Scherzer as Toronto Blue Jays.

Incredible wrestling move right there from John Schneider, running to take Scherzer “out of the game,” playing the heel, and then leaving him in to thunderous applause. A+ cheap heat.

It’s a good thing the Jays are having a nice final game because the games that actually mean something today are all defaulting to the most boring possible outcomes.

And because of how imbalanced the AL is this year, and MLB's commitment to a seeded tournament, whoever wins that awful division arguably has an easier path to the League Championship series than the top-performing Rays, Yankees, or Red Sox. Baseball, baby!

With the Jays eliminated, my favourite MLB playoff race is the AL West, where one of these teams will, at BEST, tie the all-time record for fewest wins (82) by an MLB division winner. More likely, the record is broken — and the prospect of the ENTIRE division ending under .500 is still in play.

Pete Alonso using a sledgehammer as his warm up bat is very silly, but I think it's juuuuust on the side of silly-good versus silly-bad. Maybe.

A fittingly cursed end to a bruised, broken year of baseball misfortune: Blue Jays finally begin to look like a passable (though hardly great) offensive team (Sept is their best month of the season by OPS)… and they just run of pitching.

Not the preferred outcome, but honestly some relief treating tonight’s game - Cease clearly spent, game quickly out of hand - as the end of the Jays’ playoff hopes. They made a run, but runway’s run out. 8 more games to enjoy on their own terms, and preparing to bid farewell to Old Man Springer.

I have MANY QUALMS about the particulars of Mark Carney's government, but his capacity to delivering substantial and insightful remarks on the global stage is... rather unparalleled in the modern Canadian era? Maybe even unparalleled within a wider lens of comparison?

And the Guardians, down to their last strike, get a two-run double to walk off the White Sox and gain a game on the Jays. Saxophones getting louder.

Like… if you’re asking a pitcher who wasn’t good enough FOR THE ROCKIES to be your long man in a bullpen day when you’re fighting for the last gasps of your playoff hopes… it’s clearly not how you drew up this point in the season.

That said: you don’t have to squint much to see how a healthier team can compete next year (if there is a next year). Since the trade deadline, they’ve been among the best teams in baseball. They won multiple series against the league’s top teams. They just need to do it for 162 games, not 40.

Glad the Blue Jays found a groove in August to make things interesting, but this team is too broken, too beleaguered, and just not complete enough. Played too mediocre for too long and now there’s just not enough time or gas in the tank left to make it up.

Not quite the same play — not a potential game-ender, for one — but man, why do I feel like that Varland error against the Tigers is going to be a hindsight dagger the way Semien’s error against the Tigers was in 2021?

It is far - FAR - from the most significant thing to be thinking/worrying about in these dreary days. But I often wonder what it says about this moment and our culture systems that people just seem to be listening to the same songs over and over and over again.

What was wrong about Obama’s most famous speech is there ARE two Americas, but not necessarily the ones he cited. There’s: 1) one willing to earnestly debate how to apply the constitution and its values 2) one that tolerates that debate only until it threatens their patriarchal white supremacy.

The Cardinals, in response to home-plate umpire Doug Eddings telling rookie Hancel Rincon to fix his hat last night, all wore tipped caps in their dugout tonight. The Rockies did, as well, after Eddings claimed Hunter Goodman asked for Rincon to fix his hat, something Goodman strongly denied.

Ok this clarifies things: likely the reason the Jays didn’t bite on Robert Jr is simply they see Keys (who’s been playing more outfield) as a more viable option. bsky.app/profile/keeg...

Worth remembering how much contemporary conservatism (particularly MAGA) is projection — assuming other political actors see and move through the world as you do. Hence: arguing Carney is just "doing what's best for Liberals" because the current US gov really only does what's best for Republicans.

Doubt we'll get an answer as to WHY the team didn't bite on Robert Jr., but if the idea was that Daz Cameron / Myles Straw + $5M in your pocket is the better right-handed outfielder option for the rest of the season... I have my doubts? (Then again, not my money.)

Wasn't totally on the "claim Luis Robert Jr" train for the Jays, but it wasn't NOT compelling. Now, with news that the Jays passed AND the Orioles reportedly claiming him... gonna be quite the sliding doors moment if he makes a big contribution in those all-important Toronto/Baltimore games.

A painful foul ball hit by Blue Jays star Ernie Clement raised questions about the use of protective cups. Turns out different players have different feelings on the subject.

The reason why people think Dolly was “politically neutral” is because they don’t understand being political as a series of actions born of commitment to an idea. Being political as defined by the pundit class is to be in front of a microphone delivering sound bytes, it’s something to be devoured

There are very few unequivocal forces for good in our world generally, let alone within the entertainment industry. By all accounts, Dolly was one of them. A massive loss.
