The stories held within our collection continue to invite reflection — and to remind us of the importance of listening to Indigenous artists and the histories they carry forward.

"...That winter, they had no light, heat, or cooked food. My parents really suffered, and they both said they did not know how they survived that year.”

"...My mother and father thought they would get paid, or be given something to eat, so my mother cleaned it very nicely and gave it to my father to give to the priest. They received nothing in return..."

“My mother and father had made an igloo on the ice in front of the Catholic church in Naujaat. A priest had come from Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay) to Naujaat. It was the time of year when there is no sun. The Catholic priest asked for their qudlik. He wanted to give it to a teacher who wanted one..."

The work comes to the McMichael with the following story from Aupilardjuk:

The sculpture’s title speaks to longstanding inequities between settlers and Indigenous peoples, and to the ways Indigenous knowledge, generosity and collaboration have been relied upon throughout the history of colonial settlement.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we're reflecting on 𝘎𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 by Pierre Aupilardjuk — and the story behind the work.

🖼️ Takao Tanabe (b. 1926), 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥 #23, 1972, acrylic wash on canvas, 111.5 × 183 cm. Gift from the Christopher Bredt and Jamie Cameron Collection, 2021.10.4. McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

What makes Tanabe's work so singular is the way it holds multiple traditions at once — the influence of Japanese brushwork and sumi-e, the lessons of American colour field painting, and the influence of the vast prairie landscape.
130
McMichael Canadian Art Collection @mcmichaelgallery.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
While most works in the series are spare, horizontal and restrained in colour, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥 #23 is larger in scale and bolder in palette. Tanabe segments the topography into washes of luminous colour that seem to sculpt the open space — the Prairie rendered not as emptiness, but as presence.
110
McMichael Canadian Art Collection @mcmichaelgallery.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Tanabe knew that landscape intimately — traversing it on countless hitchhiking and driving trips between Winnipeg and Banff, where he led the Banff School from 1973 to 1980.

Happy 100th birthday, Takao Tanabe. 🎉 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥 #23 (1972) is from the series for which he is best known: more than 200 minimalist paintings of the flat Canadian Prairie, made throughout the 1970s.

“I see my paintings as a celebration of life. My subconscious mind may well dictate some content and I’m content to leave it at that. I am uncomfortable with words - my paintings are perhaps my most honest and legitimate statement.” - Daphne Odjig
