Potentially sacrilegious but: The Lord of the Rings has many great moments, and a great deal more that you kind of slog through.

There are people who claim pollsters have too much influence yet every pollster has known this for about a decade.

This is in fact new information to me, thank you. Will have to raise it if I ever encounter my A level English teacher again: an important omission from our course.

I’ve sat through interminable briefings in which a very nice man explains why he decided to carve up the voting public into 16 distinct blocs with catchy but absurd names: Flag Shaggers, Jealous Judies, Digital Wombats. And because Westminster is basically like the inside of a very small conch, these terms quickly pass into common parlance. “As you can see,” some wonk on the radio will opine, “the Tories are down eight points among the Angry Trevors, a whopping 13 with Disconsolate Flexitarians. But they are at least holding firm with Be At One Mums.”

Rare example of a polling Q where there is a) an objectively correct answer, and b) that answer is "don't know".

I just don't think we should think of his job as "pollster" in the same way as a Peter Kellner or a Martin Boon. He's always been explicitly a political actor and a business guy. IIRC he got famous through a long-running campaign to get rid of the guy who ousted his old boss.

Propensity to vote, chance of voting for, would vote tactically for... Tons of Q's people can and do use to get at potential shifts, not sure why it would be "better" to use one of these as a substitute for straightforward VI. Just ask both!

Great prompt and great thread, can't argue with the recommendations. IMO Peter Jackson not getting enough credit for LOTR, and James Cameron for the run of Terminator-Aliens-T2.

Yes, point taken. Presumably there exists some age at which a cohort's average wage does in fact match the population's average wage, but without that info it's quite a meaningless stat.
020
Peter McLeod @mcleodp.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
If half of the group earns less than the average, that in itself is strong evidence of a lack of a wage premium, as it suggests the distribution of wages within the group is v similar to that within the overall population. Right?

This is a really tricky one. E.g. the ILR reforms are announced but not passed, and a subject of internal dispute. People could be answering based on actual status quo, or apparent direction of policy travel, or simply the vibe they get from Lab on migration. Think you need more Q's (no shade on YG)

Nothing to stop genre fans making their own lists? Idk why people remain surprised that those who read for a living value different things in books than those who only read as a pastime. See also: criticism of film, art, theatre, architecture, etc.
