The "rejection poems" (not usually about rejection) are usually a kind of self-assigned homework. Right now I'm practicing meter and rhyme, which I use very differently than this in what I think is my best style. The prompt (a letter poem) was the inspiration, and then I totally ignored the prompt.

Cover Letter

To those whom it may concern,
and those I do my best not to worry:
My good old bad temper may return
but I swear to get over it in a hurry.

Don't you think it's strange we say
Dear, like dearest one, from the start?
Sir or Madam, like that won't betray
the ask to tag and weigh our heart?

Lol I have almost definitely used my spelling of my name on here before, I just felt weird about it 🤣 I will say it did feel weird and wrong to write out all the other spellings! They aren't my name! Also yes in real life I almost exclusively go by the full version, I'm one of those.

It's a poem about having a headache that I wrote while having a headache. The monorhyme enacts the feeling and sounds of having a headache. The poem concludes on the hopeful note that, in the future, I will not have a headache. It's pretty good, it's just not very opaque 😂

Rejection poem today started out with an accidental triple rhyme, so became a monorhyme poem! That's a poem with the rhyme scheme AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! The rejection poems are a fun way to force myself into different styles, I didn't feel like writing anything today and when I pushed I got that, yay.

And the guy with the teenage son made his son watch Brokeback Mountain with him! Which is great for the cause of gay acceptance, and a lot of the conversation was about his conversation with his son, but also an absolute nightmare when it comes to movies you can watch with your parents! Wow!

A cool part about this is my university is known both for having a lot of people from rural areas who are in a city for the first time, and non-traditional students, so a lot of these guys were older, one had a teenage son, and a lot were from really tiny small Southern towns. It was cool to see.

At one point in the paper I do mention that I was uncomfortable because (paraphrasing) "that blow job definitely really happened and I don't like how aware I am of that" but then I talk about how John Waters' voice makes it impossible for me to be upset about anything when he's doing a voiceover 😂

The nature of the sociology assignment, which I do think was a great assignment, was to do something that we thought would push our boundaries about sexuality. My paper was about how the only taboo that actually made me uncomfortable in the movie was non-consent, and how I was surprised by that.

I was looking through old college papers and still think it's funny that A. I watched the movie Pink Flamingos for a real sociology assignment and B. Reflected in a paper that the only part of it that made me uncomfortable was that the actors were clearly "not enjoying it" in the chicken scene 🤣

Sorry, actual final point: the reason all the marketing is about Tom Cruise isn't because he's particularly good for a measure of himself in this, but because this movie would be really bad with the wrong lead actor, and Tom Cruise is a very good actor. Final word: Iñárritu is a great director. I spent some of the end of this wondering if he literally was trying to make a Cat's Cradle adaptation and it fell apart and he made this. Someone give him a Cat's Cradle adaptation! He'd be so good! Or another Vonnegut book even, he'd be awesome!

I can see why this had weird marketing. I don't know how you'd market this and still have it work? I also do wish it went a bit further with Theme B which was about Theme A, because the scenes about Theme A were often rougher and worse dialogue. This makes sense if you've seen it. Theme B was great!

I wouldn't say I loved it- the dialogue and how long it takes to get where it's going made it a rough watch. I considered walking out for the first ten minutes, and not every scene worked for me even if I got the message. When it worked for me it WORKED, the rest was fine. Maybe half WORKED, so.

For the hell of it I also saw Digger! It's a movie some won't want the spoilers for so ... ... I hated the first twenty minutes, but wow, by the end being a person who really liked the film Asteroid City and having one of my favorite novels be Cat's Cradle was VERY REWARDING! So unmarketable!

I was reminded I wanted to see this because TWO PEOPLE sent me the tiktok about how the opening is shot for shot a scene from Dracula. After seeing it I would not be surprised if more scenes didn't have direct references to older horror movies, especially vampire movies. Insane filmmaking, 10/10.

Skyler Gisondo is one of those actors I've really enjoyed in everything I've seen him in, and I hope after this he gets to do even more. Robert Pattinson makes some of the weirdest facial expressions in this and like- god they're so in the strange tone they're hard to describe, but he's so good.

Primetime was great. Just fucking great. My skin crawled, there was one scene where I was physically shaking with laughter, I had my hands on my face so much, it does what it wanted to do so well. If you can handle an interesting (and sometimes darkly comic) take on the subject, I recommend it.

Nowadays you're more likely to smell weed everywhere, which I also don't think is a great smell, but opening a package and getting a face full of good old-fashioned nasty fucking cigarette smoke smell really reminded me of how far we've come as a society.

I both did listen to and have repressed many of my memories of music that was very popular on MySpace that was this but worse. The amateur version of this. Some of it was gay, much of it was by gay people who later turned out to be extremely racist! It's weird how often that happened!
