She launched into a whole explanation about how she never drank because it was against her religion but the cop didn’t know any English. He was just waiting for her to say no. He asked multiple times before I leaned over from the passenger seat and suggested she just say no. Then we went on our way!

It was with a group of coworkers on a two week trip to Germany from the US (before I moved here) and we had one Mormon in the group who was happy to join in sober. We got a cheap hotel outside of town and they could drive. We got stopped at a check and they asked if she drank . . .

Been stopped at more than one ‘checkpoints’ in Germany for drinking. They used to set one up right on the corner I lived on in HD pretty regularly and stop everyone. The best story though was when we had a Mormon designated driver for Oktoberfes . . .

My fave thing to follow on Insta these days is that it’s an Olympic sport and US as the LA 28 host gets an automatic bid. So they’re trying to put together a team and have been holding open tryouts to get invited to training camps to join the team and become an Olympian. So interesting.

I have only ever heard it used in a different tense with a second word included like ‘couched in’. In my mind it’s the version of phrasing you’d use after you’d worked it out with a therapist (on their couch).

The laws against IVF and other alternative approaches to parenthood in Germany are archaic and contribute to childlessness and a reducing in the birth rate. Yet the laws no longer seem to apply if you want them to and have money. It’s funny because of all the modern methods . . .

Our local fire department posts after most call outs about what it was. We have learned, assistance for emergency services to open a door is code for someone died and they need to get into the house. We learned this after that happened to our neighbor and that was what they posted.

This morning the local paper publishes and article about delays and backlog at the crematorium. One funeral director is quoted as saying it’s 4x normal volume.

We live across from the fire house in our town (feeling more comfortable doxxing myself now because we are moving in the next few days) and each year they typically have an average of 300 call outs. So not even one per day on average. There were multiple calls per day at the height of the heat wave.

The three day wait was one of the most logical things about Germany. Hell cut it to two if you’re really worried. Form day one is just alllll kinds of dumb. I have a lot of feelings about sick notes but the three day policy was wise.
