The longevity cult is going to be ALL OVER the naked mole rats. For science, I guess. Hat tip @404media.co of course, because they are the best.
Image is text, reading: Naked mole-rats didn’t get the memo about being a normal mammal and instead opted for a “eusocial” society similar to insects that is ruled by a colony queen with an entourage of breeder males, which are supported by a caste system of non-breeding workers. It’s super weird, but it seems to be working out for them because they can live to nearly 40 years old—ten times longer than most animals their size—and they are highly resistant to cancer and a host of other deathbringers. Image is text, reading: In addition to this window into mole-rat social behavior, a new genetic analysis identified the critical role of an enzyme called cGAS, a common component in animal immune systems, in extending the lives of these subterranean super-agers.

Whereas cGAS may hinder DNA repair in most animals, including humans and mice, the naked mole-rat has evolved a version of the enzyme with four modified amino acids that enhances DNA repair . Naturally, the researchers also engineered some fruit flies with this naked mole rat enzyme—you gotta mess with fruit flies or it’s not science—and lo and behold, the juiced flies lived to about 70 days, roughly ten days longer than the control group.

But when you combine them all together? Magic happens.
An unholy concoction that vaguely resembles a taco made from a pizza with bagel dough, and sliced hot dogs on top. Obviously AI generated.

I see OpenAI also put out something about AI policy today, but it looks like they left out one of the most important pieces? See image. More on that in my just-posted/just-skeeted co-authored TPP piece: www.techpolicy.press/a-call-for-m... and a few pieces from the DTI blog: dtinit.org/blog/tags#AI
Two screen captures from a MacOS laptop, with Preview open to a piece called "AI in America" "OpenAI's Economic Blueprint". In the screen captures, Preview reports that the words "interoperability" (the first capture) and "portability" (the second capture) are "not found" in the PDF file.

To Neil Postman, television "has made entertainment itself the natural format for the representation of all experience." What would he say of social media? At least relative to TV, social media includes more words, I suppose, though I wouldn't call it literary. And: What about generative AI?

2025: NORAD reassures everyone that they are not using AI to track Santa.
Text: What we're hearing: "NORAD will not be using AI to track Santa's journey," Captain Rebecca Garand of NORAD tells Axios. "We track Santa using three systems: radars including the North Warning System, satellites and NORAD military aircraft. These systems provide NORAD with a continuous picture of Santa's whereabouts both in North America and abroad."

My kids asked for this, but I have to share for the sake of @chup.blakereid.org. Actually not as crazy as I expected.
You: i want it to include both ketchup and whipped cream

ChatGPT: That's an unusual combination! Let's create a unique dessert recipe that incorporates both ketchup and whipped cream. Here's an idea for a "Sweet and Savory Ketchup Berry Parfait":

Sweet and Savory Ketchup Berry Parfait
Ingredients:
1 cup mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Fresh mint leaves for garnish
Instructions:
Berry Ketchup Sauce:

In a blender, puree half of the mixed berries with the ketchup until smooth.
Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove seeds and achieve a smooth sauce.
Refrigerate the sauce until ready to use

I love Platformer but today's edition feels crazy unrealistic. Synthesizing more emotive speech-->compelling virtual human experiences is a huuuuuuuuge leap. Human engagements are built on far more than our history of words; the shallowness of these fundamentally shadow copies will emerge.
Two paragraphs of a newsletter; the text reads in key part:

And yet even in this 1.0 release, you can see the clear outlines of the sort of thing popularized in the decade-old film Her: a companion so warm, empathetic and helpful that in time its users fall in love with it. The Her comparisons are by now cliche when discussing AI in Silicon Valley, and yet until now its basic premise has felt like a distant sci-fi dream. On Thursday I asked the speaking version of ChatGPT to give me a pep talk to hit my deadline — I was running back from the Code Conference and already behind schedule — and as the model did its best to gas me up, it seemed to me that AI had taken an emotional step forward.

You can imagine the next steps here. A bot that gets to know your quirks; remembers your life history; offers you coaching or tutoring...
