Hahaha….the first set of ORGN slides our webmaster (the fabulous Brian Myers) gave me had about 1.5 hours worth of material. Do you guys want to give me your time slots so I can present it all? 😈

Rent temporary space at a coffee shop by buying a drink. Get a really big one and drink it very slowly. Not that I have ever done this. 🫣

The cat does not approve of 3rd octave flute practice. He has found a new place to glare at me even though I’m finished playing and I’ve moved on to cleaning out the instrument.

Yes! This fall, two of my graduate students will be doing industrial internships and the companies are paying them. There are better uses for NSF funds….like research grants.

We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!

I am “from Kansas City” or “from the Midwest” although I have not lived there since the 1970s. Did 14 years in California. Not from there. Have lived in Florida for 32 years but I’m still not from here.

After 40 years of inserting hard/ gas permeable contacts without a mirror, I was able to do this (cataract surgery) and watch the laser cut my actual lens into quarters for removal. TBH the drugs helped but I could still see it…

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

About 30 years ago, somewhere NW of Lanzhou, China, I was at a banquet where we passed the mic to sing. A local asked me to sing with him. I thought there was no hope until he began “Almost heaven…” I came in, a German came running up and there we were, the world’s strangest a cappella trio…

The annual backyard blueberry explosion has begun. Even with letting our grandkids run rampant through the bushes last night and leaving all the low ones for them to pick tonight, this is what happened today. Those few blackberries are a bonus.

Kind of a shame that more universities, which were once instrumental in the infrastructure of a decentralized internet, don't host their own instances of stuff like Canvas.

They do not. As I have told countless students, “Any time you spend worrying about your grade is wasted time that you could spend doing the only thing that will improve your grade — learning some chemistry.”

The only commencement address I actually remember is when my daughter graduated from Auburn the semester after the 0:01 Kick Six Iron Bowl win over Alabama. The speaker was the Auburn football radio guy. He was awesome. You just need a topic that is just as passion inspiring as SEC football.

I wear a long sleeve shirt on airplanes and I am warm enough to sleep under the blanket. It’s quite cozy. And I know where it has been and how it was washed.

I own a personal microfiber airline blanket that fits into a stuff sack about the size of a coke can. Getting it out and putting my earbud music on classical shuffle are the sleep cues for me. Works every time.
