Kosovo was a violent insurrection that became a war, which NATO eventually intervened in. Were it not for the KLA's actions, Kosovo most likely would not have won (de facto) independence. You can say it's not a useful parallel, fine, but it's a successful violent insurrection against a modern state

I get that, but I think that way of learning to be present with people wasn't the way most people learned it. Like what's unsettling about the gen Z stare isn't that they haven't learned a weird artificial behavior, it's that they don't exhibit basic ability to have an interaction at all
010
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 15h
I genuinely don't like to think I have a blind spot but I've had a lot of interactions with young people that are in a category totally new to me, to the point where I'm like "I am actually worried about this kid but also it sucks I have to do their job for them because they're not present at all"

wait we're supposed to be in favor of it? I feel like I know lots of fellow millennials who have/had pretty healthy service job attitudes, just basic efficient human reciprocity without being performatively exuberant. The gen Z stare I think extends to, like, not responding when directly addressed.

for my own well-being I choose to believe that people actually have just enough of an intuitive sense of the economy to recognize that "everybody gets an equal amount of free money" is a stupid idea in a time of high inflation and interest rates

All the stuff about whether or not AI gives sound medical advice is missing the point. Tailored medical AI products can be really good. But if an AI recommends a course of care, the AI provider is practicing medicine, and needs to be held accountable to a professional standard defined by humans.
000
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 22h
If you sue a doctor for malpractice, what happens is an adversarial process where other doctors testify about whether the defendant met the "professional standard of care." What Altman and Kennedy want is for that power to be taken away from them and given to AI companies.

When we talk about destroying maga's social and economic power base by going after car dealerships and supplement companies, we need to recognize that this government and its tech allies understand this logic too, and are already in the process of doing the equivalent to us.
100
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 22h
The point of this is to break scientific medicine entirely by destroying board certification and malpractice liability, two of the main mechanisms for the medical profession to establish the standard of care. It's impossible to overstate how destructive this change would be to medicine as a field.
Mr. Kennedy said OpenAI's chief executive, Sam Altman, told him during a recent visit to his office that it would be "malpractice for a doctor to make a diagnosis or to make a prescription without at least checking A.I." Mr. Kennedy apparently agreed.

those trainings are already ancient history. Mass phishing compaigns now have individually tailored messages that use all available information about the target's role, org structure, actual coworker names, etc. Basically the entire org now gets the spear phishing experience.

All the folk wisdom he uses about establishing a hierarchy where you're the "alpha" is bullshit and contradicted by actual research. Dogs don't actually establish hierarchies that way except in extremely narrow circumstances, and maybe more importantly, dogs know that people aren't dogs.
290
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 28/09/2026
that guy is exactly who she's talking about as being scientifically, catastrophically wrong. If you treat a dog like that, you're going to end up with a dog who may superficially seem to be well-behaved, but it's only doing so out of fear, which means it will be unpredictable and dangerous.
3130
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 28/09/2026
and it's a shame we don't talk about it more, because the connections between the culture war over dog training (evidence-based positive reinforcement vs. "balanced" training rooted in ideology about behaviorism and hierarchy), parenting, and politics are very uncomfortable but very enlightening

"overconfident dumbasses try to get cute, immediately get in way over their heads, and unleash a different, cosmic evil" is the basic Coen structure and their oeuvre is basically an exploration of that plot in a variety of tonal registers and mixtures of comedy/tragedy

I find it funny that none of that discussion is about the music video, which exists
000
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 27/09/2026
oh and the video has less than 100 million views, which seems relevant to the whole popularity question
000
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 27/09/2026
surprised there's so much discourse about choosin texas and very little about the video, which is (slightly) more interesting for its sheer amateurism, dated 2000s styling, and the muted political-cultural signaling done through several shots of people very pointedly lighting up in bars
110
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 27/09/2026
I watched the music video instead of just listening. Not only is everybody in the video white, it's also full of white conservative styling and cultural nods. There are multiple shots of people very pointedly smoking in bars.

but why are they "heartland" in a way Rogers Park isn't, specifically? Rogers Park has practically zero mass media representation. It's not very wealthy. People live out extremely American stories there. Any "heartland" that excludes it is doing work that I find extremely suspect.
020
large language marge @mcdonalds.help · 26/09/2026
yeah, I think the concept of "heartland" is just fundamentally trash for this reason. Whenever I hear it I think of Rogers Park in particular, and how it's never part of anyone's idea of the heartland. The word is always, always doing xenophobic work.

it's kind of the dominant culture of text based social media. People who could read critically but prefer to offload the work of interpretation by skipping the article and going straight to the comments so they have a quick digest of what they should think about something

a lot of people are still making a mistake by thinking about this in terms of the 2008 crash. In 2008, treasuries were still the world's safe haven and there was practically unlimited opportunity for fiscal expansion. It will be unbelievably hard to get people to understand why that's not true now.

the connotation I get from "Toyota of EVs" is a reliable, practical, but boring driving appliance. The Ioniq 5 is extremely practical and reliable (aside from one fatal mysterious gremlin problem of unclear prevalance) but is too fast and fun to drive to be a driving appliance

the big intellectual innovation these people made is that they don't need to consider any possibility that something other than their imagined future might happen instead or that we need to take those other possibilities into account when making decisions

not even in a glib way, I mean we did used to have access to a general concept that government and mass culture were separate, and when we wake from the nightmarish frame the right wing has imposed where they're inextricable, it will feel like a revelation to people who have forgotten

so many times in the last few years I've thought about how wildly cathartic it will be when a politician figures out how to tap into nostalgia over being able to shrug your shoulders and go, "It's a free country"

on the other hand this has made the very large amount of music that isn't on Spotify somehow feel even more obscure. That stuff mostly hasn't gotten harder to find—some of it is on YouTube, or Bandcamp, or torrents—but it's like it's been ejected from the cultural canon somehow

very much the same thing. Americans undervalue our stable institutions, rule of law, and democratic process, not just for their intrinsic value but for how they directly subsidize our material standard of living. Without those things we start down the road to becoming Large Argentina
