The GenAI epidemic spreading across retro gaming circles exposes something: Making the scenes unfriendly to queer/trans/furries by giving a pass to unpleasant people and bigots in the past has left them without the networks of creators LGBT-friendly communities have access to and self-support with.

Yeah that's how they are near me. Even if they're not picked up for eBay they tend to use it as a price guide. Doesn't help that our big "chain" thrift store has an online marketplace of their own that most good stuff gets sent to as well. This was at a tiny hole-in-the-wall near a tourist spot.

Burned all my thrifting luck for the next decade. Stumbled onto this amalgamation of a Leitz 135mm Hektor and 35mm Elmar on glued together body caps for $12...... They're both in very rough shape optically but still!!!

Also I managed to get my KW Pilot Super's bottom shutter piece to finally work reliably! Actually changes speeds too unlike my Pilot 6. It's getting added back to the test pile again when I'm back from vacation in a week along with the 118 Kodaks, Primo Jr, and a Minolta A-2.

So people tend to assume that's the cause - instead of the CFA difference (though for all I know it could be some of both).
010
McCheeseBob @mccheesebob.com · 10/09/2026
From what I've seen discussed on older digital camera appreciation spots it's mostly down to the color filter array (CFA). People still love the original 5D for the same reason and it's also CMOS. The swap over to thinner CFAs for better low light happened around the CCD/CMOS swap in the late 2000s.

No thoughts about the OoT remake but this. With the assumed rush of people to buy a real Ocarina pleeeeease don't buy the Nintendo one or a cheapie Amazon one - they'll probably stink to play. Get a Night by Noble or a ceramic clone from Songbird or STL - much more usable instruments.

With the Medalist back from a CLA I figured I had to do at least one glamor shot before I load a test roll. Figured I'd match it's energy and bring out my ZD back. Such a silly and inconvenient camera back with simultaneously lovely early big CCD/CFA colors.

Addendum to this - actually got a nice short walk around a neighborhood thanks to a friend so got some outside Pen-F time. I may pay for that in ankle pain tomorrow but it was worth it. Also my CLA'd Medalist arrived with my 127 film and 118 adapter - I have a quickly growing project pile this week.

Happy worldwide half-frame day everyone! Still slowly chugging through my second roll on the Pen-F. Got my shirt just in time yesterday. Twisted my ankle on the way to work yesterday so my photos will be mostly inside my house this year (and just as the weather is clearing up too). #wwhfpd26

The Zeca was my first LF-ish camera. It's been mostly in a drawer since probably 2020. I swapped out the original Tessar for a 7" Dagor a couple months back (that I bought for my 5x7 Ansco but hadn't make a lens board) but hadn't gotten around to testing it - guess I'll be doing a double trial run.
000
McCheeseBob @mccheesebob.com · 04/09/2026
Portable Dagor-ish update - still no luck on the Icarette's bellows. Holes keep popping up and the fabric paint drying a bit sticky isn't helping. I gave in and ordered a Patent-Rollex for the 6.5x9 Niklas. That arrived today but it was mislabeled. Fits 9x12cm instead - so going on my 9x12 Zeh Zeca.

Hrmmm - maybe 3d print some Hasselblad lens to back adapter or a Graflok mount in between to go straight from lens mount/bellows to back? I'm just imagining focus registration issues being a pain - but probably complete diy. Then a dummy flash trigger for shutter sync.
000
McCheeseBob @mccheesebob.com · 04/09/2026
Oh yeah if this is for that Aptus back then going all in on a Hasselblad is your best bet (though I can't imagine one with bellows will be that much lighter than a technical camera). I've had a similar debate getting parts for scanning with my Mamiya ZD back and just kinda gave up.

Test roll for the Plus-X is pictures - think I overdeveloped this one/may have a chunk of fog over time. Definitely not too usable at iso 125 anymore - think 62 looks decent but may even like more light.

I've wanted to get an early Bronica for this reason but I've heard the bellows are pretty limited at non-macro distances. Maybe a 6x6 Graflok back for a 2x3 technical or press camera would do? Not sure which one has the most movements.

Went to prep my second roll for half frame day and immediately ran out - looks like my year with UFX 100 is up. It's treated me well but I'm on to other pastures. Next I'll be using this nearly 40 year old Plus-X roll I've been looking forward to. May do a quick iso exposure test roll first.

I know the point of half frame is size but the weather has been messy the past couple days so I've been a bit bored. Had to pull out ...the abomination. (Ironically this smaller 4.75" Cinephor can't get to infinity because of all the plastic and metal in the way - may have to grab my 7")

Happy half-frame shooting everyone! My Pentax 17 has an ECN-2 roll I'm saving for a trip later in the month and my OG Pens have gotten too hazy as of late. Looks like I'll be sticking to my Pen-F and Pen D3 this time around. Today I've got the 25mm F/4 with me. #wwhf

Oh, heck, it's September go shoot some half frame. Or buy an Olympus Pen—I'll give you advice on choosing a model and servicing some of them if they need (not the F, that's a whole other thing). Or get a Pentax 17. or a Kodak Ektar H35N. Don't get a Fujifilm X half, they've nothing to do with this.
