"acting on their own" is a lie. These are computer programs doing what they were programmed to do by unethical, irresponsible, and malevolent people.

There's a shop near me for these*. An actual shop! I wonder if they sell beanie babies? * I think. Or there was not long ago. Not sure if it's still going.

Had a few months with no work in the summer of 96 when this was big. Used to go to a place on a Sunday night with a big sound system in a small room 😁🤯 It was 3am licenses back then and it might not get going until midnight, but for those 3 hours ... 😃

Yeah, I put the fault with local councils / planning. More and more shops are allowed and built, and then people complain that lots of premises are empty! Well, obviously. There are too many shops! Councils should be encouraging / forcing landlords to convert some shops to business or residential.

Ditto Stoke-on-Trent. (Obviously it wasn't foreseeable that building a tunnel in an area riddled with mines was a bad idea. Just bad luck I guess.)

Build rail instead of high speed rail. (Or just improve the existing network. If you ask rail nerds I'm sure they could list any number of relatively cheap upgrades with a good cost/benefit ratio.) Basically do more small things instead of going for big "gold-plated" "prestige" projects.

otoh, if you don't own any US stocks, and you do hold some long gilts, things might turn out ok? Ok, UK stocks will fall too, but from a more reasonable valuation. #markets

Makes sense. I was reading somewhere a few days ago that eating carbs tends to lower HRV (i.e. higher stress on Garmin), eating fat doesn't, and protein is maybe somewhere in between, or maybe similar to fat. I guess it's related to glucose or insulin levels.

010

Protein and Veg and Fasting @mccheapo.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Ah, interesting. I gather the "Stress" figure is calculated from HRV, which makes sense as Tom's battery stops charging during the orange sections. So you want a low heart rate and (relatively) high hrv to recharge.

I saw (a week or two ago?) something saying 20-30% would pay it if they died *now*. Which isn't quite the same, they might take avoidance mesaures or spend it on care (or holidays) before they die. Maybe looking at actual rates is more reliable (tbf I think they are rising slowly). #UKpolitics

I'm not an expert at these things, so yeah, confirmation would be nice. But I think you're right, www.dividenddata.co.uk/gilts.py?tic... says real yield 2.02%, so 0.9% below the 10 year TIPS. I guess people don't trust the US gov for some reason??

Hmmm, buy TIPS betting that real rates will fall, or buy T-bonds betting that real rates *and* inflation will fall ... spoiled for choice!

Those comments on markets mostly formed by 1 or 2 stocks were interesting. Reminded me of Finland and Nokia. That worked out OK in the end ... didn't it??

Look at the 1993-2000 period (if you can see the year numbers). We're in a stock market boom led by techs just like that period. The line is volatile, but generally gets lower until 2000 and you can see how it jumps higher in 2000/2001. No guarantees, but a repeat of the dot com bust seems likely.

Your ideas make sense. We don't know the exact situation* so many answers can be right - it depends. Certainly having £200k in the building soc doesn't sound like a good idea for this person. * or if this "person" really even exists with these numbers?? No idea how they get this data.

I dunno. Depends what % of property value the mortgage is, and what the savings are. Under 50% mortgage and some stock market investments could make sense to me.

I think of it like insurance. If our banks / utilities / shops / etc are shafting their customers (us!) at least we can gain something back if we own the shares.

000

Protein and Veg and Fasting @mccheapo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Agreed. But also; a way for ordinary people to gain from big business is to buy their shares. Reeves was right that we need to persuade more people to buy shares in UK companies.

The camps exist. More than 1 death per week inside them. Worms in the food. People shackled and made to eat like dogs. Executions in the streets. People disappeared to African and Central American prisons. Girls impregnated and moved to red states and forced to bring their rapists' babies to term.

It's crazy that the NHS has so few beds, and embarrassing how low down on this table we are. Some (a lot?) of the bed blocking problems are caused by the simple lack of spare places to move people around. Is the gov increasing the number of beds per head of population? If not, why not? #UKpolitics
