Looks like a Swedish AT4CS RS. Hopefully used up, but maybe the barman wanted an option for dealing with particularly problematic customers.

I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

It still shocks me that Estonia has had voting over the internet since 2005, and the rest of the world hasn't followed suit. In 2023 over half the country voted online, and by all counts it's pretty secure, enabled by Estonia's public key infrastructure.

Seeing the image of a Chinese J-36 depicted with an apparent high-energy laser effector making the rounds, I decided to look into the practicalities of such weapons in an air warfare context. Some of this ended up turning into a mini-primer on laser weapons.

Definitely not, Hunter is an IFV. But even if you mounted a new turret with a big gun, I'd say no. But I'm a bit of a purist. To be a tank, it should have armour beyond the STANAG 4569 scale. At least on turret cheeks and glacis, ideally on a couple of other areas as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily make the same branding choices. And as much as I'm not a fan of the orange man, I would also say that 'Department of Defence' has often sounded annoyingly euphemistic to my ear. Especially when their big Middle Eastern adventure was in full swing.

Mark Cazalet @mcazalet.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I don't particularly mind which people go with. But we normally try to keep pace with rebrandings, as annoying as it can be to change writing habits (see: Türkiye). So the use of DoW here isn't a concession to Trump but rather a reflection that this is the name and branding they use right now.

I've never understood why the MoD was so resistant to change and keen to protect the status quo. It's like it doesn't understand the criticism is like trying to find exploits in a piece of software. The point is we want the vulnerabilities patched so the software becomes stronger and more capable.

I'd add Dithering/Stagnation on there. The wrong kind of institutional inertia can really mess things up over a long timescale. Because it can ruin your ability to respond to threats in the future. See: the French and Greeks getting ships out to Cyprus first because RN had nothing available.
