Introduction
The Sergeant at Arms is an el ted officer of the House of Representatives, nominated at the beginning of each Congress by the House majority leadership, and elected by the House membership.
The Sergeant at
Arms has law enforcement, protocol, and administrative responsibilities within the House.1 Initially established during the First Congress (1789-1791),2 the duties of the Sergeant at Arms are mandated in law, House rules, custom, and oversight by the House Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on House Administration in the exercise of their oversight roles. Additionally, the Sergeant at Arms' portfolio complements the legislative and administrative operations of the Clerk of the House and the administrative functions of the Chief Administrative Officer.

"Recently, however, Rufo has backed away from his previously forthright defense of meritocracy" -- how else could one interpret this bit other than not seeing it and calling it plainly?
Recently, however, Rufo has backed away from his previously forthright defense of meritocracy, and by all available evidence, he has done so because the principle turns out to contain a fatal flaw: Many of the Americans who benefit from meritocracy have brown skin. More to the point, a lot of Republicans resent those brown-skinned Americans. Given the right's commitment to anti-intellectualism and populist resentment, and President Trump's open embrace of job promotions based on loyalty or appearance ("central casting") rather than qualifications, Rufo's turn against race-blind merit might have been inevitable. Or perhaps his abandonment of the merit principle reveals a great deal about the motives that have driven him all along.

The woman who wrote this op-ed is either seriously unwell or a terrible person www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...
A new report from the American Enterprise Institute's Survey Center on American Life showed a startling 66% of young Democratic women blame men for the challenges facing women in American society. A majority of young women identify as Democrats.
Regardless of the outcome in the Cornell civil lawsuit and the reopened criminal investigation, young women must take responsibility for their actions. Everyone at that Cornell party - including the alleged victim - made mistakes, from drinking too much to taking drugs to partaking in unwise sex. Why should the men involved be held to a higher standard?

There's a pretty direct line between "When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything" and this kind of MNF banter. The rot is everywhere in our society but it's a lot worse in some places than others. (screenshot from sports.yahoo.com/articles/al-...)
Then, Michaels cited the familiar football phrase that "winning is the best deodorant," before Herbstreit predicted that Browns fans would eventually embrace Watson after previously booing him in the preseason.

"You want the fans to get behind you, and that goes for pretty much any market," Herbstreit said. "This is an extreme case because of what you laid out with Deshaun Watson, but if you convert on third downs, you hit passes, you lead this team to victories, those boos turn into cheers."

This growth is wild & completely unsustainable. [For those who aren't adjacent to this, arXiv is a public repository where many / most authors post their scientific papers, sometimes simultaneous with submission to a journal and sometimes after acceptance.]
Open access repositories across the board are seeing a sharp increase in the number of submissions

per author, per month. In September of 2016, arxiv received 9,869 submissions. In September of 2024, arXiv received 20,569 submissions. This September, arXiv received 40,363 submissions, which

in turn generated almost 9,000 support tickets for arXiv staff and moderators. In only the past two years, submissions have doubled.

Joe Cruz Opinion guest essayist

One thread I didn't have room to pursue in the essay is that writing is itself a technology for cognitive offloading. It lets us put memory and attention and concentration into the world rather than carrying everything in our heads. That is enormously useful, but it might also mean that we exercise some capacities less. The humanities and social sciences are so lopsided in privileging writing - and I suspect ease of assessment is a major driver - that we have obscured the costs to these other capacities for thought and have become lazy about imagining alternative ways of cultivating them. Al dramatically highlights the same question. What kinds of thinking should we be willing to offload, and what kinds do we want students to keep practicing for themselves?

Russ Vought's attack on the scientific apparatus is snowballing. Much stronger restrictions on the grant application process for the one (1) NSF call for basic astronomy research are going to be in place this year. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...
The MPS Astronomical Sciences Core Research program (Astro-Core) supports foundational research in the astronomical sciences. The program provides individual investigator and collaborative research grants for observational, theoretical, computational, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), laboratory, and archival data studies in astronomy and astrophysics. The program also considers proposals for projects and tools that enable or enhance astronomical research. Proposals may span multiple disciplines and/or areas of study and may utilize multiple techniques. This program was formerly known as Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Grants (AAG).

Important Considerations: The Astro-Core program is anticipated to be especially competitive in Fiscal Year 2027. For this reason, please note the following:

Multiple submissions by the same lead principal investigator (PI), whether as part of a collaborative project or not, are strongly discouraged.

PIs who already have an active MPS Astronomical Sciences award that is not set to expire in the upcoming fiscal year should contact their cognizant Program Officer before considering submitting a proposal for another concurrent award.

As stated in the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (Chapter IV.E), previously declined proposals may be resubmitted only after substantial revisions to take into account major comments or concerns from the prior review. Resubmissions that have not been sufficiently revised may be returned without review.

NSF recognizes that some research projects within this program may require more than three years to realize transformative research outcomes. Such proposals should include strong justification for the longer duration and the associated resources needed to undertake the project.

<alt-text truncated but continues to note that collaborative proposals must be well justified>

I think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers
