Haha. Hahahaha.
The year is 2055. There is a press conference at LAX Metro Transit Center. The People Mover is delayed again. It is 99.999999999% complete. Every few years it is more complete by another nine.

This isn't true. Riordan did propose using tobacco settlement funds to cover the costs of Rampart division scandal, but city council rejected.
"Sidewalk repair is a big issue for Los Angeles. Former mayor Richard Riordan was considering allocating funds from an expected tobacco industry lawsuit settlement for sidewalk repairs. When the city was found liable in a series of lawsuits against police misconduct, funds from the tobacco judgment were hastily earmarked to cover the cost of the police settlements."

Last I checked, the Westlake Sombrita was still there, but the top part with the solar light had detached from the bus stop pole. Not sure how effective it is at night

In committee this week, CM Katy Yaroslavsky suggested doing a single curb ramp per corner instead of two to save $$. Other than being undesirable bc it shoots the user directly into traffic, it's not clear if this is legal in CA. www.youtube.com/live/y0EGU-U...

This is a big deal. Part of this project is along a stretch of Pico where homeowners succeeded in gating four public streets decades ago, forcing people biking, walking or rolling to detour around the gates down dangerous streets (Pico, Arlington, Western). afrolanews.org/2024/10/deca...

Learned through a public records request that there is/was a group chat called "OME Chiefs" for the Office of Major Events in the mayor's office.
Text group: "OME Chiefs, 6 members"

A text message says: "In LADOT press clips: https://futureis.la/p/la-has-stopped-repaving-our-streets"

Response says "A good read," Thanks for sharing"

Noticed my CPRA requests to LA Metro are being assigned to a "Media" bucket. Not sure if this is new? Happy #foiafriday to all who celebrate!

Still can't get over how LA County Public Works took over an LAUSD schoolyard greening project bc the nonprofit that received the grant money couldn't hack it — then took over 10 YEARS to actually implement the project. It could take longer — the project is supposed to break ground next year.
Hillcrest Drive Elementary in the heart of L.A.’s Crenshaw District was awarded a nearly $1 million Prop 84 grant to green its schoolyard in 2012 as one of the top-ranked projects by the California Natural Resources Agency.

After the original nonprofit could no longer shoulder the cost of working with LAUSD, the L.A. County Department of Public Works took over the Hillcrest greening project in 2015. Ten years later, a spokesperson for the agency told AfroLA that the project is set to break ground in 2026, 14 years after the grant was awarded. Records obtained by AfroLA show that the project has repeatedly missed deadlines for completion.

If anyone has insight into the years (decades?) long negotiation between the city of LA & LAUSD over opening schoolyards as public parks, I'd love to talk to you: maylintu@gmail.com
Acquiring new park property, as I noted earlier, has historically proven difficult for LA. But even though the team identified existing public land each of those proposed park areas, there's least one park just waiting to be developed in every single high-need grid cell — an LAUSD schoolyard. Last week LAUSD's board unanimously voted to approve a long-awaited joint-powers agreement with the city to operate parks on campuses. This new agreement means LA no longer needs to go through a separate permitting process for each new school it adds, says Councilmember Nithya Raman, who has been spearheading the city's Community School Parks program.
