Disentangling Race and Party: What Callais Asks and What Statistics can Answer

Shifting to descriptive associations makes more sense, but even then there are estimation problems when there is a high degree of correspondence between race & party A Callais approach can also hide intentional discrimination and differences in the opportunity to elect candidates of choice

The paper grapples w/interesting & unresolved Q's of what are -- and how to best estimate -- the right quantities of interest in this context The majority seems toggle between different causal quantities. As we argue, however, estimating a direct effect of race on voting is basically impossible

🚨 New working paper from @jdeschler.bsky.social me and Justin Grimmer on how to best implement the instructions to "control for party" in Callais TLDR: the opinion is unclear from the perspective of statistical inference and, under certain conditions, the instructions can be gamed by bad actors

I see this a lot - here, about MIT libraries; another example was the literary journal Yale Review - tracing the funding crisis to the OBBA, and I think it's too conveniently buying into what university presidents and boards would like you to believe.

Setting aside conceptual post-treatment issues (big) Given low numbers of Black Rs in the South, this will be largely an analysis of Black vs White Ds Do they have different preferences? Possibly yes, in primaries But it will be hard to say anything about Republicans - and maybe that’s the point

Still thinking about these instructions In the South, minority voters express “different” preferences over candidates by being Democrats and voting for Democrats (see work by Ansolabehere) If you control for party, you control away the biggest outcome of those different preferences

This is very important to consider I think “human” instruction has much to offer and in the end many students will be willing to pay a premium for non-AI education Similar to how exclusive and expensive private elementary schools have abolished screens altogether But who knows?

Unlike legislative term limits, justice term limits would likely have healthy downstream effects - specifically limiting the likelihood of the Court becoming ideologically lopsided (as it is now) We show this in this USC law review paper chicagounbound.uchicago.edu/cgi/viewcont...

This is consistent with what we’ve found in our polling - term limits for Supreme Court justices are extremely popular and enjoy bipartisan popular suppprt Dare I say it? With the right kind of elite alignment, it could even be “amendment-level” popular support (still unlikely)

seeing two different academic responses to AI in the classroom: 1) the below (go back to basics) vs. 2) incorporate it radically into a re-imagining of teaching thoughts about how things will go?

Yes As well, students seem to really appreciate removing AI as a temptation there’s a feeling it really punishes people trying to do the right thing (ie their own original work)

The flip side - and there is a flip side! - is that writing longer term papers over a longer time frame really forces students to think more deeply and in a way that writing a short 90 min essay does not However it is harder to see a path forward with longer-form writing in the age of AI

mine were in-class essays, so writing/analysis can be done (though you sacrifice some depth). as for readings -- esp books -- that is hard. i teach mostly cases, which resolves that issue.

I shifted almost everything in my fall course into in-class blue book evaluations, with no internet, and I’m glad I did The students liked it as well There is more to be done as AI advances but this is the way

The thing about the press conference is that Trump didn't say he would ask Congress to override the Court's decision, which is what a strong president whose party controlled both houses of Congress would do.
