Can we automate how AI models “understand” (see, know, identify, contrast) “culture” the way humans can? That’s the agenda for today. Slides by Diyi Yang captures some of the challenges and thinking.

Within AI innovation, there's a strong technical idea of AI 'safety' that would love to be able to contain risk and ethical concerns. (@mayameme.bsky.social's excellent new book discusses the fantasy of ethics-by-design)

AI slop would be taken very seriously by a visual theorist and would not be treated like that boring person that we feel we must defend because, well, we want to show we think that all people are special.

There’s also this piece that thoughtfully interrogates the original styleGAN paper and ‘this person does not exist’ website to ask what it means when neither the photographer nor the photo exist any more. There’s something bigger going on here than tech diffusion.

Law does not refer at all to the Big Tech influence on arts and culture. Work by K Allado MacDowell a writer and artist who set up Google’s machine art and culture program would be an obvious place to start. Esp if Law wants to talk about text generation
111
Maya Indira Ganesh @mayameme.bsky.social · 03/03/2025
Also TC works with text. Why is that in a piece abt image culture and pls don’t say “bc the models are now multi modal”. Law is possibly normalising the existence of AI visual production as legible to and in service of the Corporate Model.
111
Maya Indira Ganesh @mayameme.bsky.social · 03/03/2025
This is the political economics and cultural capital end of things. I found the Ted Chiang reference odd esp as Law’s piece is mostly about language and a vague ‘humans are cool’ argument - which is not what I think TC is actually doing btw.
131
Maya Indira Ganesh @mayameme.bsky.social · 03/03/2025
Law also might refer to Bourdieu and Farocki and Stuart Hall to think about how images are made with technology. They’re all different kinds of theorists but all can be read together here. I can say more and how and why.

Scholars are interested in how a societal order built on visuality is changing and how we talk about the relationship between neural net and dataset and what an image is is changing .
110
Maya Indira Ganesh @mayameme.bsky.social · 03/03/2025
visual theorists are writing about how seeing is changing, how beholding is changing, that there is no human eye beholder. We can read Fabian Offert, Leo Impett, on the way images operate that changes how we appreciate, create, how we make truth claims, advance power.
111
Maya Indira Ganesh @mayameme.bsky.social · 03/03/2025
Are not really writing about “it’s humans therefore we like it and valourise it and protect it. This is an argument made by historical materialists and activists ie not people actually thinking about the experience of culture and ‘image operations’.
