SH2 - In the final game, the "Burning Man" painting depicts the Lakeview Hotel on fire, foreshadowing its real fate. However, in a prototype build and in the Art of Silent Hill DVD, there is a painting of a ghoulish Mary above a town street.

Burning Man painting in Silent Hill 2. It's a wireframe depiction of the Lakeview Hotel, but it has been painted with red and orange to make fire over it.

Comparison between the jail cell in the prototype and the final game. The Burning Man painting replaces the early painting in the final game. There are no other differences in the cell.

Screenshot from the Art of Silent Hill DVD, showing "Drowing 2", the painting from the prototype. It shows an aerial view of a wide town street with nondescript buildings, but a ghoulish sick Mary has been painted over with red and orange paint over the bottom of the painting. It looks like she's on fire. Her eyes are blank and white, a lot of her hair has fallen off, and her mouth is agape. Her nightgown can be vaguely made out.

SH1 - There's an easy-to-miss note on the desk of the motel office. It's a diary entry by Norman Young mentioning his role in the PTV drug trade and his fear of Dr. Kaufmann's influence.

Location of the diary in the motel office. It's lodged between a door and a chair at an odd angle, which makes it easy to miss.

Screenshot of the diary, a white notebook with a spiral spine. It reads:
"September 18th. Took package. Told to sit on it awhile."

Diary continues: "Don't want to get involved, but can't disobey..."

Diary continues. It reads: "He's probably linked to the death of the mayor and others."

SH3 - Heather is actually somewhat fond of Stanley's doll when she first sees it. It's only after she reads Stanley's message for her that she becomes disgusted by it.

Heather examining Stanley's doll in the visitor room of Brookhaven. She comments "I played with dolls like this when I was a child, too."

The Silent Hill Chronicle offers the idea that the fog could represent or manifest the thoughts of the many dead people at the bottom of Toluca Lake from over the years. This includes the casualties of an epidemic, the missing Little Baroness ship, and the blood of executed prisoners.

Fragment of the Silent Hill Chronicle showing a screenshot of Silent Hill 3, where Heather is running around the foggy parking lot of the motel. Next to the image there's the caption "The mist is a symbol of Silent Hill. It can also be interpreted as the thoughts of the dead rising up from the lake and settling over the town."

Screenshot of Silent Hill 2. James is at Rosewater Park examining a monument atop some short stairs, surrounded by grass and other plants. The monument reads "In memory of the sixty-seven who died of illness and now sleep beneath the lake."

Fragment from the local magazine in Toluca Prison. It reads "Many corpses rest at the bottom of this lake. Their bony hands reach up towards the boats that pass overhead. Perhaps they reach for their comrades."
