A comic about Joe and Rico bickering about nothing. #draws #comics #MidnightCowboy
Joe is standing in front of the bathroom door in Rico's X-flat. The door has a poster of oranges and the word 'Florida' printed in pairs. He slaps the door by his shoulder and proclaims to an audience of Rico, "Here's Ratso!" and again by his head with a good deal of pride, "Aand here's me!" He is a great deal taller than Rico is what he is saying.

Unimpressed, Rico gives back, "So what?" Rico sits on a bed across from Joe with a cigarette nested between his fingers.

Unphased, Joe's arms are now proudly crossed across his chest, "What's what is that've been the tallest in my class since the fifth grade!"

"Ok, and so?"

"So?" Joe doubles down, "So the world looks mighty fine from up here!"

Rico shoves his cigarette in his mouth and goes to stand, "You know what? Let me try something."

Rico grabs a nearby chair and drags it right in front of Joe, close to the wall. He starts to climb the chair. Joe just stares, watching this all happen. With great effort, Rico stands before Joe on the chair and stares down at him. Joe is a bit dumbstruck by Rico's effort and stares up at him, unaccustomed to seeing him at such an eye level.

"Yeahh," Rico smiles, "I think I see what you mean." It's amusing to look down on Joe this once. Joe mutters under his breath, "Now that's cheatin'."

Rico, reaching the limits of his stamina, begins to wobble. Joe notices this right away.

Rico falls forward and onto Joe who holds him up with ease, one hand around the barrel of his chest and the other grabbing his shoulder. Rico's hands sink into Joe's arms in a panic. "Woah, careful, easy now." Joe smiles, "Wouldn't want to crack your head open."

Rico looks up at Joe's kind face and feels uneasy.

He recoils away from Joe, "Yeah, okay. You can get your mitts offa me. I can get down fine by myself."

Joe is understanding, "Sure, Ratso..."

Later, Rico is seated comfortably on an armchair with a cigarette between his fingers. Joe leans over him from behind with another cigarette pinched between his fingers, "You know you was cheatin' right?" Rico looks annoyed.

got something interesting a while back. Japanese booklet made to promote the release of Midnight Cowboy. costly but worth it because there’s some promotional images I’ve never seen before

yeah i think it’s a very reasonable reading

in the film i feel like it’s implied what he’s suffering from is tuberculosis (with added stuff from the bad leg and generally shitty living conditions he has that probably have exacerbated the issues) i think the book mentions that he had polio as a kid as well and it messed him up real bad

i think i’ve heard this bought up before, i don’t think it was entirely intentional but it feels eerily reminiscent

i love the “doomed guys” subgenre of film. or “messed up evil buddy film” as i call it

-identity and personas plays a role in both films to an extent (the Betty/Diane and Rita/Camilla thing plus the other characters we see play multiple sort of roles in MD, Joe’s cowboy persona, the whole thing w/Rico asking to be called Rico instead of “Ratso” in MC among other things
000
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
true…both protagonists in both films are trying to escape something in a sense (the failed dream of being a famous actress and the guilt over the hit on an ex-lover in Mulholland Drive and a traumatic past in Midnight Cowboy)

and the last act being reality, the multiple sequences in MC where characters will fantasize about something usually related to a better life) -a character wears a cowboy outfit and stands out in the world of the film -a shot of someone’s face with palm trees overlaid against it

maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
-the MC’s loss of innocence/the failure of their dream and the American Dream in general is a big plot point -dreams and fantasy play a big role in both, especially in regards to the juxtaposition of the character’s reality (the common interpretation of the first part of MD being a fantasy/dream-

I can elaborate actually. after a while these will become increasingly more of a stretch. both films have: -a naive and optimistic blonde moving to the big city to pursue a dream of theirs -they meet a brunette and they form a weird and important bond

my two favorite films. oddly enough, they kind of both have similar themes going on?

the part where (a very stoned) Joe has on glasses and asks Rico “Guess who I am? Me!” always gets a little giggle out of me. Great little improvised moment as well.

such a good performance especially in that third act. messes me up badly.

Also interesting that earlier in the X-flat Joe has this line where he’s telling Rico “I’m a dangerous person” and says he would’ve killed him but it’s like obvious he’s putting on a front but later when he commits his most violent act he’s doing it *for* Rico

Oh definitely

maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
-bringing us back to that aspect of things. also I think that the nightmare w/the assault flashbacks (in which rizzo is present) could tie into that w/how joe’s unsure about staying because he initially thinks rizzo invited him to the x flat for nefarious purposes
010
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
i say that i think his trauma ties into it because a: i feel like just in general it informs nearly everything he does for obvious reasons and b: in the theater scene he’s basically like disassociating by imagining/flashing back to his Texas girlfriend Annie making out with him so it’s sorta-

maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
yeah i think self-hate’s probably the most major factor into those scenes as well

i gravitate towards tragic/doomed love stories so it seems by default

maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
-are interesting because it feels like it‘s telling us this is a man who is likely deeply conflicted about his own sexuality because of his trauma + internalized stuff so he‘s like…taking that anger out on other people

maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Yeah I feel like the two encounters Joe has with men (also interesting because he goes from not being able to actually seriously harm the young student to very likely killing the older gentleman at the end-showing how the harshness of the city has affected him I think. among other things)-

i mean in the script rico’s like managing the hotel and doing bingo with the ladies and any sort of like. sexual attention they’re giving seems to be towards joe which makes sense cuz they want his services in this scenario. they’re also older ladies in the film i feel like
110
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 01/06/2026
i agree. somehow the script version feels far less uhh…well i guess queer coded with the focus on Rico Gets All the Chicks In Florida (and joe is like. kinda there? i prefer how joe’s more present in the movie fantasy)
110
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 01/06/2026
in regards to the film itself i do like the visual of rico standing in front of the dress shop window especially with how shadowy everything aside from the storefront looks
110
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
yeah i think it’s a cool sounding visual
010
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
and because the fantasy plays out with considerable differences in the film instead of the old ladies like coming at him all pissed and him falling in a pool in the script the shop window lights just turn off once the plan fails
110
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
also in rico’s fantasy he‘s also like seeing inside of the hotel joe’s at and imagining tons of women there with joe getting with all of them. and the florida fantasy is kicked off by him seeing a shop window with florida sportswear clothes inside
210
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
oh wait joe is mentioned in like one line. it’s just like describing an image of joe and rico sitting on the beach together. so there is joe there in the fantasy just not as much. and we don’t know if he has a shirt on or not
110
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
oh yeah that makes sense
010
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
oh yeah, so more like Biblical allusions of sorts
010
maxxexe @maxxexe316.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
like there’s the whole dream sequence that has this very bright, palette to it, this one shot late into the film where it holds on a Florida poster where someone’s in like an orange field and has their hands raised to the sky (and this shot is placed in a scene after Joe pawns the radio)
