www.npr.org/2026/10/01/n... I've learned that a lot of people think we need more institutions for disabled people, because they assume all group homes, assisted living, and other forms of residential care are "institutions." Not so!

Trump administration reverses stance on integration of people with disabilities
Disability rights advocates are angered by the latest reversal but are rallying behind proposed legislation and working with states to strengthen protections for community integration.

It's wild how the Heritage Foundation's public website explains that excluding trans women from women's sports is the first step in a legal strategy toward dismantling all Title IX protections, and yet so many Democrats will narrowly debate whether trans women belong in women's sports.

The saddleback caterpillars from our front garden have entered their questing phase. They are crawling all over the exterior walls of our house in search of a good place to pupate. Good luck, little buddies!
This dark brownish-purple caterpillar has a pair of large tentacles on top of its front and rear, with smaller tentacles and protuberances along its sides. All of the tentacles and protuberances are covered with sharp, light brown, bristle-like hairs. The top of the caterpillar's body has an opaque green patch with a dark spot in the center, forming the impression of a saddle. The spot is held within a pale green oval with a black line around it. There is a small pale green spot on the caterpillar's head, and on its rear, there are two larger pale green spots that create the impression of eye patches. The caterpillar is crawling along slightly dirty creamy white vinyl house siding.

This is the first time I've noticed violet coral fungus growing in my neighborhood park. Could be Clavaria zollingeri or Clavulina amethystina - either way, very pretty!
A strikingly purple-colored fungus resembling branched coral forms a clump about 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide . The fragile, slender, forking branches have rounded, brownish tips. The fungus sprouts from forest duff thinly covered by brown oak leaf litter and scattered twigs. Maple leaf viburnum can be seen growing in the background.

Please admire this spicebush swallowtail caterpillar in its golden questing form, looking for all the world like a shiny Caterpie. Best of luck, little buddy!

@tkingfisher.com I thought you might get a kick out of this toy my 6yo made. As we read "Illuminations," she thought the Scarling was likely seeking negative attention because it couldn't speak or write very well, so she gave it an AAC device to turn it back into a nice little buddy.
A chunk of tree root with a white face and red clown smile painted at the top, and smaller roots radiating from the bottom. A little rectangular piece of paper is attached to one of the branching roots. Smaller rectangles are drawn on the paper in a child's attempt to depict an AAC app running on a tablet.

My neighborhood park has a big flush of viscid violet cortinarius - always so nice to see! I believe these are C. iodes, and not C. iodeoides. These two mushrooms are visually indistinguishable, but the latter has a bitter slime on its cap whereas the former's slime is neutral in flavor.
Two purple fungi with glossy, slippery caps and pale stalks are growing amongst damp leaf litter. The older mushroom on the left has a flattened parasol-shaped cap, and the younger one on the right has a cap that is still rounded like a dome. The mushrooms are sprouted from a layer of forest duff thinly covered with brown, fallen oak and maple leaves, twigs, and bits of bark; a Canada mayflower leaf is visible in the background.

The oldest natural history museum in the US is closing its doors to the public at the end of this month. What a distressing piece of news! This is a failure of leadership, a shame to our nation, and a tremendous loss to the people of Greater Philadelphia. ansp.org/learn/Journa...

The Heritage Foundation is known for mainstreaming a position in which every trans woman in women's sports is stealing resources & opportunities from a more-deserving cis woman. Now, it is making the case that every woman who competes in sports is stealing resources from a more-deserving cis man.

Huh. Remembering the fate of Atlantic City's "little guy contractors," back in the 90s, one wonders if this demolition company made sure they were paid up front.

I would push back on the authors' assertion that these are "unintended consequences." Confusion, chaos, headaches, and misery for the federal workforce are intended consequences here.

www.bbc.com/news/article... I think it is a misstep for university leaders to keep framing these cuts in terms of what they will cost the university. Rather, what will this cost the public?

Albeit billionaires do not think the USA will lose science. They think they are mining inefficiencies in the university system and believe they are poised to recruit smart people into their own enterprises, where they will be more efficient and profitable than ever before.
