MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 12/09/2026This sounds like an argument based on isolating Jolson apart from the entire edifice of blackface and minstrelsy. Minstrelsy was a huge cultural product that simultaneously was inspired by black art forms, mocked black culture & tropes, and appropriated black art for profit. 120

MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Timbre is a thing and a huge one. But it's weirdly outside of "theory" for some reason. It's not like classical orchestral music doesn't grapple with it. Fun fact, violins and oboes sound different and that affects how they're used in a composition... 030
MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026I hope you will take some time out to explore rhythmic concepts since they affect so much in music while somewhat being ignored by traditional western music theory. 110
MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026But, why does the blues sound like the blues seems like the kind of question you could use to walk through a lot of broad aspects of theory to explore how music is built. 110
MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026I would guess you'll end up walking through many of the big categories of musical structures and "rules" and what they impact and allow while not getting bogged down memorizing the circle of 5ths etc. 100
MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026But either way, I think music is somewhat unusual in that we all have a huge exposure to it while the structures and techniques are very hidden. Learning that there structural reasons why this sounds lost and unresolved while that sounds hopeful and triumphant can be very revelatory. 110
MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 06/07/2026I'm sure you've thought all this through...but it seems like a basic question is are the students coming to this from a music "appreciation" perspective or more from an "amateur" music maker perspective? (Inevitably a bit of both I assume.) 200

MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 26/05/2026OK, but you seem to be saying that labeling virtually every recent US transit project a "failure" is a key step to move forward? MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 30/04/2026I wonder if the shift in music to short form internet and mega-spectacle live performance as the primary outlets for big artists will change the kind of charisma that's rewarded. MaxUtil @maxutil.bsky.social · 30/04/2026Raw "charisma" still does seem to be an under recognized factor in the success of people in almost all the 'performing' arts (by which I include politics, newscasters, influencers, musicians, etc, etc) 120
