Birding for mental health ihike.org/maximiliano-... #hikeOctober is raising awareness on mental health. Consider donating to any of the hiking events. Birding is an excellent excuse for hiking and a wonderful resource for mental health. I recommend: Birding under the influence by Dorian Anderson

The chiffchaff and the willow warbler are very hard to tell apart by shape or color. But listen to them! Many neurons look alike but they sing different songs for different purposes. At Forskningstorget we will explore the shapes, colors and songs of neurons #birdingthebrain #birding #neuroskyence

I am organizing an exhibition for Forskningstorget i Trondheim Birding the brain: how a birdwatcher studies neurons The plan is to give a birding tour of the brain to explore the shapes, colors and songs defining the extraordinary diversity of neurons. #Birding #neuroskyence

In the experiment described the teams were provided with single units. I imagine the results would be worse if each team had to start from spike sorting with their own methodology

The IBL and recent papers applied strict criteria to define single units and showed how only about 10% of recorded data can be classified as single unit. But we still see bombastic claims of tens of thousands of “neurons” but no clear definition of selection criteria

These are such important efforts by the IBL. I think its impact should be taken very seriously by neuroscientists (when they are in the lab or acting as reviewers) and by the publishers. “You either record an action potential or you do not” I don’t believe this is true for Neuropixels #neuroskyence

The latest story from the #QuattrocoloLab fulfills a long time dream. Are #CajalRetzius cells important for the maturation of spatial navigation? It turns out that superficial pyramidal cells in CA1 care much more about CR cells postnatal presence that deep pyramidal cells.

I was not completely convinced of the «Position-independence» because the heterotopia seems to abide to rostrocaudal and mediolateral axes of cell types, connectivity and function as the cortex above. Hence the «organization-independence»

This is the most interesting paper I have read in a while. The organization of a neural system (nucleus, layer or whatever) does not matter for function as long as it contains the right cell types connected the right way. Thanks to @gquattrocolo.bsky.social for inviting me to her Journal Club

Alfred Russel Wallace born OTD in 1823. He said he shared with Darwin “an intense interest in … the variety [of living things] that catches the eye of the observer even among those which are very much alike, but which are soon found to differ in several distinct characters.” 🌱🐋🧪 #HistSTM #EvoBio

#QuattrocoloLab preprint out 👇! We explored changes in the proteome of hippocampal and dentate gyrus growth cones at early postnatal stages. We see that at P1 growth cones from the two subregions are very similar, but start to diverge from P3, with HP growth cones maturing earlier then DG ones.

The writing style is so understated compared to today’s claims. But also: we just send an idea, please publish while we work on the data. The paper by Cobbs and Comfort describes the role played by Franklin.

Basket cells, parvalbumin expressing or fast-spiking neurons, names that emphasize different properties of the same type. However they are not all the same, like these in the mouse barrel cortex: one has axon in its layer; the other sends axon to other layers Both are very beautiful #neuroskyence
