My comment to BBC Oxfordshire on Monday's motion about the EHRC Code of Practice and Trans Rights: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
'Oxford has the highest density of transgender and non-binary people outside of London, according to the census.

The proposals were put forward by Oxford Green Party councillor Dr Max Morris, who said they would help the trans community feel safe at a time when "moral panic" had led to "harassment and discrimination".

Photo of Max with caption: Dr Max Morris put forward a motion recommitting the council to following trans-inclusive policies

Morris said there had been "a lot of uncertainty and a lot of confusion" about what the updated EHRC guidance meant''Morris said they hoped by the city council showing leadership in supporting the trans community, other businesses, local authorities and community groups would follow suit.

"The real issue here is the uncertainty for an already marginalised minority group, but also for local businesses, charities, public service providers including Oxford City Council," they said.

"How on earth are we supposed to navigate this when the guidance is so unclear?"

Something else I drew to the attention of Oxford City Council was last week's protest outside the Churchill Hospital, opposing the NHS contract with Palantir, a tech firm linked to human rights abuses, war crimes, discriminatory policing practices, and mass surveillance: www.wsws.org/en/articles/...

Placing responsibility for wildfire prevention on individuals does less than nothing to address the causes of and remedies to climate breakdown. This is the short-term, do-nothing mindset of neoliberal governance: it's your fault, not ours. We need systemic change to the economy, not phone alerts. 🚨
"Severe alert issued by the UK Government: There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbeques, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks..."

Just reviewed the proofs for my chapter in the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Queer Studies. It drew on unpublished data from my recent book to consider post-identity sexual politics in the digital era, with a focus on how social movements for LGBTQ+ people and sex workers overlap in significant ways.

It's the UK's third heatwave this year and as temperatures reach their hottest from around 3pm I've gone to the 'Cool Space' in the East Oxford Community Centre. Drinking water, tables and chairs allowing people to work here, I'd recommend it for anyone who's more vulnerable or simply uncomfortable.

"What is anarchism? Anarchism is about us looking after each other, having control over our own lives, working towards a world where we don't have bosses, landlords, the state or corporations telling us what to do or making decisions that harm us. Many of us practice anarchism every day without realising it."

Brilliant inaugural professorial lecture by @michaellister.bsky.social this evening: 'Who Cares What You Think? Public Voices, Politics and Security'. Highlighted the disconnects between people's attitudes and policy frameworks; complexity of academic researchers and simplicity of political elites.
