I once interviewed Bill Hicks who talked about the pornography of doom. I refuse the pornographers of doom. I refuse to turn the terror of the now into a spectacle, into engagement farming. We can be engines of kindness, connectivity and wonder online, so forgive me for concentrating on that.

Thanks for this - it’s a great BH quote that really sums up our times. And Hookland is the perfect counterpoint - when we are being force fed the monsters in plain sight, the old ghosts and godlings become ever more believable and trustworthy.

100% and my replies to the bots were basically “how do I speak to a human being?” But the BT system has clearly been set up to avoid customers talking to actual members of staff at all costs.

Burnham’s grasp the nettle politics is a real opportunity and many people are ready for a new approach. It enables Labour to distance themselves from the constant oppositional stance /no solutions of the Tories and Reform. Right Wing press and media will fight it but their influence is waning.

And it’s symptomatic of a country looking for something positive when politics is dire and the country faces so many problems, many of which (climate change, environment, social care) wont be addressed by this or any other government.

Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom. We need this space. We ache for the sublime. For re-enchantment is an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment is an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope. In re-enchantment we stop dreaming of inevitable apocalypse and find the permissive space to tell stories of hope.
