Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 16/12/2025One of my favorite parts about working on a new scene, is seeing it go from blockout to final. I take screenshots along the way at small milestones to document this. it fun to look back on the progress. Check out more of this scene, and a breakdown coming shortly! www.artstation.com/artwork/L4dEEr 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 15/12/2025Wrapped up this personal project just in time to enter the new year. Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 04/02/2025Still chipping away at this scene. Just been working on the landscape for the past few weeks, Still a lot missing. But I feel its coming together pretty well! going to focus on some foliage/scatter meshes next. #UnrealEngine #Gamedev #EnvironmentArt #WIP 0173
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 15/01/2025Had a blast visiting the Melbourne museum to see a project I worked on. My producer Nathan was in town so we decided to go check it out. Very different from working on video games, but a great challenge! Plus it’s fun to say my work has been in a museum. 010
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 04/01/2025Still chipping away at my scene. Been focusing on lighting and some rock layout in the time that I've had over the holiday period. I rekon ill start to get this landscape shader in place then some foliage. #UnrealEngine #GameDev #Gameart #ScreenshotSaturday 082

Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 13/12/2024Overall it feels like an improvement over previous years. the reveals were all super fun, so were the awards. But the Game changer award and Amir's speech was the highlight for me. Need to see more of that kinda positivity in the industry these days. 030

Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I've been working on some rocks recently. SO hard to nail down, but feeling confident with where they are sitting at the moment, to move on. These rocks were sculpted in Zbrush, along with their tiling textures. could be fun to render out the sculpts? #GameArt #Art #GameDev #UnrealEngine 1180
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Ikr! I find it’s also mentally the coolest. It’s like meditation when shooting, you have to practice mindfulness and looking inward in order to make a good shot, I find it very relaxing. 010
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Not art related, but seeing as the end of the year is nearing I’d thought I’d share. One of my goals this year was to place in an archery competition, and a few weeks ago I surpassed my own expectations by placing 1st It was just a club competition, but always share your wins, no matter how small 130
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 18/11/2024I'm cooking up a new #unreal Scene. Trying to get a good composition down and lay the storytelling foundations. Loving doing rock sculpting again. Will be refining all that as I go. I think ill post more of this as I go, and show progress. #unrealengine #gameart #Gamedev #EnvironmnetArt 090
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 14/11/2024I had the exact same train of thought hahaha only way I managed to get my self into it was literally not having a choice. Did an art test for a freelancing gig with it, having not ever given it a good go. either that or pay for software making freelancing for me redundant hahah 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 14/11/2024A huge amount of respect for the rest of the team, those that were let go and those still there. Especially those not given full credit and put under "special thanks" Its not how I would have imagined my first game launch, watching from the sidelines, but I gained alot along the way :) 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 14/11/2024I never really got to celebrate my first game credit I had just shy of 5 years of development time on flintlock. It was all wrapped up ready to go. And a few months before launch 2/3 of the studio was laid off... A sad way to end such a hard journey, but I've come to celebrate it in my own way. 230
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 01/11/2024This was the final in game result. alot of iteration and small adjustments, but I think it came out really well in the end, and something I'm proud of, looking back on it. The team and my directors were very helpful and supportive in finding this look, so endless credit to them as well. #GameDev 030
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 01/11/2024The images above are from some of the earliest exploration, just trying to see what would work. but I think it came close to the final product. conveying the story and design of the game, showing the destruction of the war and the toll its had on the landscape. 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 01/11/2024The challenge was leveraging a lot of existing assets, while creating a unique looking environment. Alot of this was a combination of assets made by other artists, re-mixing textures and focusing on composition logic. taking ideas from real life reference and some great concept art made by the team. 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 01/11/2024One of the things I'm most proud of while working on Flintlock was being given the opportunity to explore and help steer the art direction of the trenches. I spent some time exploring ideas that would reinforce the existing art direction. #Gamedev #Unreal #Gameart #UnrealEngine 390
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 31/10/2024I'd say keeping material/texture count down to a reasonable level, while still trying to push them further looks wise. also making sure that they look cool without standing out too much or looks like the same tree used 100 times. I 100% could have done things better, given the chance 010
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 30/10/2024Thanks! These are just a small part of the general foliage kit. But each “biome/pallet” of foliage would take a few weeks. Overall I was doing foliage on and off again for years, redoing certain assets if my skills got better or if I saw room for performance improvements 120
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 30/10/2024Some snippets of my foliage asset room while working on Flintlock. Majority of the games foliage was created by me. With some foundational work being done in the months prior by others. Interesting challenge working on foliage for an open world game. #gameart #gamedev #unrealengine #unreal #art 36213
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 30/10/2024I was inspired by the foliage/biome artist from Diablo, I forget their name but if you look Diablo up on ArtStation you will see their work. A very easy way to present work that has some critical detail! 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 29/10/2024Some interactive foliage I worked on a while ago when first experimenting with this sort of thing. I'm eager to learn some other methods for this and see if it can work on a range of assets. but I do love me some interaction, even in a basic form. #unreal #unrealengine #Gamedev #Gameart #3dart 091
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 28/10/2024It’s actually seperate. Treating them like mesh decals in this example. Only works well for a static environment. But I was using substance designer to get interesting shapes and patterns 100
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 28/10/2024Thought I may as well re-post this here. Some experimentation I did a while back with water based foliage for a potential scene. Was fun to work on the water shader and some funky stuff for the surface algae. could be cool to take this further. #gamedev #unrealengine #gameart #3dArt #environmentart 1233
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 26/10/2024Most of the assets here I made from scratch. Mainly the foliage assets, things like rocks, stumps, grass etc may have been a combination of other peoples works and some scans. The rest was upto me to make something as a guide.I became the defacto foliage person, so anything regarding that fell to me 010
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 26/10/2024There was lots of input from past and current colleagues at a44. Some ground work was laid and I came in to pull some things together. I’d highly recommend searching flintlock on ArtStation and check out work from the rest of the team 000
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 26/10/2024One of my roles on flintlock was creating foliage kits and “biome pallets” to act as a guideline for the level artists. There are some from one of the zones. Figuring out the art direction and general species composition was a blast. #gamedev #gameart #environmentart 4295
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 26/10/2024I’m glad you liked it! It was a very talented team on that project. I worked on that vista in the second image a bit! Three peaks was a challenge to make, but a fun zone nonetheless! 110
Max @maxmakesgames.bsky.social · 26/10/2024Here’s some work from my last released game, Flintlock.
