An evening at RSPB Bowling Green Marsh recently. Spent a good 45 minutes in the hide, of which produced some quality sightings, the main attraction being the Eurasian Spoonbill walking about, but also 2 Spotted Redshanks and a Green Sandpiper, my 187th year tick. 40 bird species total, not bad.

Today (Jan 21st) is the day... TWO DECADES of Tetrapod Zoology. We start with a review of what went down in 2025... it was quite a busy year. Huge thanks to everyone who visits, reads and leaves comments at Tet Zoo, and especially those who assist with efforts. tetzoo.com/blog/2026/1/...
A montage of animals that had relevance of one sort of another to my 2025…. proboscideans, varanids, phorusrhacids, marsupials, and cryptids like long-necked seals and tatzelwurms.Cover slide from one of the several events on Mesozoic Art II. The art on the cover of the book is by the amazing Anthony Hutchings, who I’ve now worked with on several occasions (the results of a new collab are due out soon).Lightroom London gives you more than one opportunity to see the Prehistoric Planet dinosaurs at life-size, both outside (as here) and as part of the event. At right, me with actor Damien Lewis, the show’s narrator. Damien was one of several celebs at the opening event in July. Billie Piper was there too but I didn’t talk to her. Darren Naish being subtle and low-key in demonstrating enthusiasm for Spinosaurus. This replica skull was brought to the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival 2025 by the University of Portsmouth team.

Very happy having seen the seven Tundra Bean Geese near Dorchester today. Here's a photo of one of them.

#Dinoconuk day 1 haul. Seriously running out of room, in my room that I got back to, which I can do this year between the days as Exeter is much closer to home than London.

Finally saw a Scorpionfly in southern Dorset yesterday, albeit a female, meaning it didn't actually have the weird scorpion-like tail. Can say I've at least seen one now, though.

Similarly to #Bitterns, one of the blessings of living where I am is how common Western Marsh #Harriers are for me. Also like Bitterns, Marsh Harriers were fundamentally extinct in the UK, with I believe only one individual left.

Living in Somerset, I am lucky enough to be quite frequently exposed to Eurasian #Bitterns, Botaurus stellaris, a species of bird once extinct from hunting and habitat loss in the UK. Here are some photos I took of an individual in flight only a couple weeks ago.

Despite living in the UK, a country completely derelict in its biodiversity, I am blessed with the fact I live in a small village on the Somerset levels, meaning I do get an appropriate amount of what wildlife we do have. All these scenes are taken from my village or areas of walkable distance.

New #paleoart posted to #Patreon for #FossilFriday: #sauropod Atlasaurus walks through glowing phytoplankton on a pleasant Jurassic evening. The hi-res painting, WIPs and scientific rationale for the scene can be found here: www.patreon.com/posts/129695... #sciart
A long-necked dinosaur, silhouetted against a night sky bisected by the delicate misty swirls of the Milky Way, walks through a sea of glowing blue dinoflagellates. A crescent moon occurs just above her tail. She wonders why no one else wanted to come on this memorable night walk, and then remembers that she is a reconstruction by an artist living over one hundred million years in the future, and that she exists only as pixels on screens. She has no permanence, no physicality. But, in being composed mainly of light, she feels a oneness with the glowing organisms at her feet, and the twinkling stars above. "Are we not all transient, temporary expressions of physics?", she thinks. "And for what I lack in body, I exist here, in this setting, in this moment, forever surrounded by two of nature's grandest spectacles." She walks on, her lighter-coloured scales catching the glow of the stars and waves. "Things could be worse", she thinks, smiling at how deeply philosophical her small sauropod brain has turned out to be.
