#LFF The Beloved - Sorogoyen’s anti-Sentimental Value weaponises film techniques to portray a family whose worlds have been shaped by cinema for the worst. Luengo is at her very best; Bardem is so tormented, you’d think home is where he truly belongs. A brutal look at pasts that can never be erased.

#LFF Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall - Few things go together like a rapscallion and a grand piano. PTA’s filmmaking (with help from Benny Safdie) perfectly compliments Winter’s playful earnestness; name another concert film that values cameras and security guards so highly as supporting characters.

#LFF Elsinore exists as much to honour Ian Charleson as to give Scott the BAFTA and the National Theatre promo. Scott undeniably excels at channelling Ian’s anxiety and determination yet cannot overcome Stone’s good-intentioned biopic direction that grows triter over time or Colman’s uncanny hairdo.

Digger despises America. Hates the world it’s shaped, the culture it’s bred, the art it creates, the idea that its self-awareness can redeem it, the general public. So dour, nihilistic and anti-critique that it becomes captivating, might be AGI’s best in years. God help you if you expected a comedy.

Extra Geography’s tragically real concepts of queer teen experiences and frail friendship are stronger for how Manners realises them than how its screenplay can communicate them. As a collection of cringy, precious last moments of girlhood it’s lovely, as anything else it falls disappointingly flat.

Boorman and the Devil reaffirms my stance that Exorcist II, for all the BTS chaos and failure explored here, is a weird picture that rules. A satisfying, moving ode to the shake-ups and audacities studios are merging into never touching again, and confirmation that an E2 respecter is making Martyrs.

Forgotten Island exemplifies the best and worst of DWA; the gross-out weeb ADHD of it all, excellently animated as may be, can get vexing, yet it screams Filipino pride and teen spirit and its third act leaves a mighty emotional payoff. It will change kids’ lives and outlast The Hangover by decades.

This is what the Looney Tunes will be like under Skydance
A Beep Beep the Road Runner comic page from 1981, found in a British comic book.

Panel 1:
Road Runner drinks iron, and his three triplet sons......TELL you about it. Through rhyme.
"The doc's put Pappa on an iron diet!"
"But I wouldn't advise you folks to try it!"

Panel 2:
Wile E. Coyote spies on them through the Road Runner house's window. He turns to us.
"Yikes! Did you hear that? That Road Runner must be full of iron. Now is the time to realise a lifetime's ambition!"

Panel 3:
"Soon..."
Wile E. Coyote approaches the Road Runner from behind a rock with a magnet in hand.
R: "BEEP! BEEP!"
W: "Here he comes now, folks! Right into my little trap! YUK! YUK! YUK!"

Panel 4:
Road Runner feels the effects of the magnet and reacts in a rhyming British tone.
"I say! I say! Do have a care! Something pulls me through the air!"

Panel 5:
Wile E. comes awfully close to catching the Road Runner.
R: "What kind of madness is this I see? It's surely an impossibility?"
W: "In a COMIC strip, ANYTHING'S possible! YUK!"

Panel 6:
Road Runner KLINKs onto the magnet. He looks concerned.
W: "This magnet sure has a FATAL attraction for you, Road Runner!"

Panel 7:
Wile E. drags the magnetised Road Runner back home.
W: "Just like a carrier BAGnet!"
R: "Just take a look at that cocky grin! Wile E.'s really rubbing it in!"

Panel 8:
Wile E. arrives at his cave and tries to pull the magnet off.
W: "Off with the magnet now! YUK! YUK!"
R: "I say, old chum! Enough! You are being rather rough!"

Panel 9:
Wile E. pulls the magnet off.
W: "And there we are!"
R: "Ouch! And ooh! And ooyah, too!"

Panel 10:
The magnet flies away with Wile E. clinging onto it.
W: "YEEAAGH! Wh-what's happening?"
R: "Don't ask me ― it's a mystery!"

Panel 11:
The magnet KLANKs onto a jet plane.
W: "OH, NO!"

Panel 12:
W: "HELP!"
Bud: "Did you hear someone calling for help, Sam?"
Sam: "Up here, bud? Don't be silly!"
R: "Well, that's got rid of that son-of-a-gun! I'm free once more to run and run! BEEP BEEP! HO-HO!"

The Weight - McKinley handles his characters’ positions and stakes with top-form precision – a deconstruction of when the protagonist’s perfection is another man’s benefit while the lower tier is easy to dispose. Danger feels both avoidable and unexpected in this wilderness. A stressfully good time.

The name ‘Skydance’ comes from David’s love for aviation. He is a trained pilot and he’s always loved when planes do loop-de-loops. Skydancing, if you will. In Skydance’s first film as a measly failson production company, he even got to play a WWI pilot. That never happened again

Much like The Dog Stars, Heart of the Beast has plenty of the vibes yet little of the juice. Competently built and melancholic, yet too favourable towards the military practices that wreck dogs like Odin. But when he reacts to CGI or lays his paw on Pitt’s back, well, that’s the magic of the movies.

I wish Hope left me gleefully confounded with its comically immortal protagonists, CGI from 2006, endless carnage and an equally endless diarrhoea flashback; instead it’s too lethargic to get with. Mismanages its runtime to death, barely grasps how comedy works; too much of an “is this good?” thing.
