A lot of fears and hopes about AI hinge on whether we’ll get “recursive self-improvement” – models building their own successors, a potentially enormous security risk and also a great advantage for leading AI labs. Anthropic’s Dario Amodei said he’s seeing first signs of it.

Unlike other parts of the world, the EU has rules for AI that are publicly written down and that its citizens can actually read. Since this month, those rules can also be enforced in practice, including with fines potentially reaching into the billions.

With the recent news out of OpenAI, it seems like a good point for a reminder that the AI Act will get teeth in just a few days. It’ll be up to a few dozen people in the EU’s AI Office to enforce the law, as models get ever-more capable and tensions run high about who gets access to what tech.
