Seems like not a lot of other people are making the segue from Open Streets Hennepin to the flamenco tribute to Jimi Hendrix that's starting imminently at the Granada. Folks don't know what they're missing. Heck, I barely know what I'm not missing.

Here's the question about running a better suburbs-coded campaign than usual: How does that improvement in the statewide campaign trade off against not having anyone local to knock on doors? Trump and Vance received 92,979 votes in the state house districts where no Republican is running this year.

More generally, there's way too much attention to the breakdown of each county's vote by party and way too little attention to the breakdown of each party's vote by county.
Table of 2024 Minnesota presidential votes showing each candidate's top 10 counties, as well as a total for the remaining 77 counties. The table shows the fraction of teh candidate's statewide vote obtained in each county. The top 10 for Trump/Vance are Hennepin, Dakota, Anoka, Ramsey, Washington, Wright, Stearns, St. Louis, Scott, and Olmsted counties. They range from 12.98% in Hennepin County to 2.60% in Olmsted County, with 46.46% from the other 77 counties. The top 10 for Harris/Walz are Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka, Washington, St. Louis, Olmsted, Scott, Carver, and right counties. They range from 30.34% in Hennepin County to 1.86% in Wright County, with 24.71% from the other 77 counties.

This exchange on Almanac is bizarre. Mary Lahammer seems unaware that Minnesota judges need to retire at the end of the month they turn 70, which is what Tad Jude did. And rather than set her straight, he relocates the county board of commissioners into the executive branch.

The message that your voting experience will be smoother if you update registration in advance gets less and less worthwhile as the EDR rate drops lower. The people who our voices reach and who have the wherewithal to update largely are up to date. It's not a bad message, just not so high impact.

I still hear of people that are convinced that one can't vote by mail because it won't work. And I have to think, weird that something that won't work has already worked for tens of thousands of Minnesotans.

Two people multiplying together their numbers of fingers and toes can reach 10,000. Aside from that, it isn't a particularly significant number. Kids nowadays don't even watch odometers roll over. But still, Minneapolis passing the 10,000 vote point seems worthy of some celebration.

But if 2/3 of the eligible Minnesotans vote (or 66.7%), we'll break the norm that midterm elections have lower turnout than presidential years. In the period from 1980 onward, the lowest presidential-year turnout is 66.61% in 1996. The two turnout ranges would overlap at last.

If 64.9% of eligible Minnesotans vote, that will be best midterm turnout going back as far as we have UFL VEP data, which is 1980. The current record holder is 2002 with 64.89%.

How ambitious a turnout goal should Minnesota shoot for? These are expressed as % of voting-eligible population, estimated by the University of Florida Election Lab (UFL VEP). Explanations for specific numbers are down-thread. Mildly ambitious: 64.3% Rather ambitious: 64.9% Wildly ambitious: 66.7%

Amen. A lot of the bad ideas I see are good ideas in other states that become bad when imported across the state line. Advice that doesn't specify a state should be ignored on that basis alone. States have different laws.

The one notable fact I do see in the Minnesota absentee statistics is that in-person voting has been very strong in Washington County: 2,611 out of 204,977 registered voters, 1.27%. Compare with Hennepin County's 7,308 out of 862,839, 0.85%, and even lower percentages in other metro counties.

I would urge caution in interpreting the Minnesota absentee voting stats from earlier this week. Some counties' accepted-by-mail numbers are clearly lagging in ways that only elections office issues can plausibly account for, not voter behavior or USPS performance. www.sos.mn.gov/election-adm...

Here's this year's data straight off the city web site, focused in just on the "mail" category and showing each day's contribution individually rather than cumulatively. You can really clearly see the dips on the two Tuesdays. Even without data about drop offs or postmarks you can draw a conclusion
Line chart of mail early votes by day, starting around 250 but thereafter generally at or above 500 on the days other than Tuesdays but down in the double-digit range each of the two Tuesdays

I got questions about whether one can tell how many "mail" ballots are dropped off vs. mailed in and whether one can tell the USPS's speed. In both cases I had to say, not with published info. But see those relatively flat spots in the curves on Tuesdays? Those suggest a lot of two-day mail.
