sometimes i feel like people understand that the war on drugs is a failure across every front (# of drugs in country, # of drug users, utility of spending, millions dead, millions incarcerated, etc), but don't internalize that it necessitates entirely rethinking societal relationship to substances.

Tangentially, this is why we will win. Those of us who have no issue loudly proclaiming our belief in an egalitarian democracy with guaranteed rights to housing, healthcare, nutrition, childcare, etc. are going to win against these losers who are too ashamed of their goals to state them publicly.
