David Ho, a climate scientist at the University of Hawaii, responded to our request for comment on the paper by saying he was not interested in reading it. “I’m sorry, but I’d rather keep my brain cells,” he said.

I continue to say that data visualization really tells a story that you can't get from other methods

Well we're talking about an e bike going at 50+ here. Not even getting into the overengineered American truck. The reality is that all these vehicles should be limited more thoroughly, speeds within pedestrian heavy areas should be enforced more heavily, and public transit options should be expanded

Basically think motorcycle speeds and collisions with even less protective gear. Even then, a motorcycle can absorb more of an impact.

See that's where you'd be surprised. And this is only accounting if the ebike is going at 28mph. Survivability dramatically lowers the faster a vehicle goes. And unlike with a car or truck, the rider is equally if not more in danger than a pedestrian. www.butlerinjury.com/blog/can-e-b...

Another good thing to remember is that once a vehicle is traveling at 40, peds have about a 10% chance of surviving a collision. That means only nine out of ten don't. And that's only accounting for adults. Children the numbers are likely worse.
Pedestrian survival probability. If hit at 20mph, 9 out of 10 survive. Hit at 30 mph, 5 out of 10 survive. At 40mph only 1 out of 10 survive.

That would be a good distinction, yes. I've seen motorcycles go through residential sections hitting close to that speed though, and there was a recent incident with an 11 year old in Florida going 50mph on an e bike

Also the thing to remember is that with an e bike hitting a ped at 75 the likely outcome is both people are going to end up very very bad

Matt needs a UX gig 🐀 @mattz-design.pro · 02/10/2026
Ignoring the fact that manufacturers aren't putting governors on cars so it's not a case of dealerships magically making car go faster like this, but it's quite a difference between a car going 120mph on a highway and an e bike going 75mph in a city Anyway both should be limited

Growing up in the 80s I had a lot of 70s/80s sci-fi optimism books filled with illustrations of far off alien planets and space stations and sleek, modern cities. I like to think that future exists somewhere.

Let's ignore all that and confront the reality that "synthetic research" is unethical. It is indefensible to create a product, service, or policy that affects real people without once speaking with them

Things Gavin Newsom has vetoed this week: -A ban on secretly recording people with smart glasses -A ban on ICE agents working for the state government -A ban on websites selling your data -A bill giving native tribes more say over water rights -A bill protecting transgender healthcare providers

One of the funny things about Art of War is that people who never read it think it's some brilliant treatise on strategy. Then you do read it and figure out that it's basically just keep morale high and logistics, essentially Math.

Depending on the project, you need to submit things such as environmental studies and in depth schematics of what is being constructed, or licensure or certificates

Well, no, it shouldn't be that way at all. This is why at least at the federal level there has been an implementation, albeit slow, of simplifying forms and putting them into plain language. However things like permitting are more difficult due to adherence to regulatory frameworks

I think the biggest shift in AI isn't going to be companies going public or hyperscaler buildouts. I think it's going to be the smaller, open models being developed that can run on a home machine.

As for tokens and dealing with design systems, no I'm not doing a lot of that unless I'm taking on a completely new product initiative with a new client. But maintaining the system, tokens, and storybook is annoying work that I would rather never do. Outsource that to an ai or a system designer.

I do like creating initial screens. What I don't like is when some PM wants to see 5 different versions of the same thing. But a lot of the tedious, awful parts of design has to do with culture and that our work doesn't neatly fall into agile rituals, and not the actual work.

I do like the idea that I could stop dealing with the tedious nonsense of creating design tokens and shuffling figma elements around and actually have more time for iterations and talking with users and doing usability testing, but management is just going to say make more screen faster
