Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I still prefer a paper copy of a book, but lately, when the print is too small, I've had to resort to the e-book version, since I can enlarge it. (Probably not ideal for bathtub reading, though.) 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I've enjoyed a couple of the Cadfael mysteries (and the TV series), but I really loved all the Felse mysteries. I also happened to read "Closely Watched Trains" recently, and was happy to realize it was translated by Edith Pargeter. 220
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 02/10/2026To anybody else I'd say that's unnecessarily ambitious, but since you've blasted through to your first goal, I don't see why not. Have you looked ahead to see if authors from those places would be feasible? 110
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Admittedly, I didn't confirm that there ARE books by them. LOL I guess part of the problem is access, right? A quick search of "books by authors from..." is turning up authors, but maybe the books aren't available? Also, maybe try searching for Nauru instead of Naoero. 220
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Hmm, interesting challenge. Two men from Timor-Leste were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996. I don't think they wrote novels, but perhaps their other writings would qualify? 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 29/09/2026"...floating the idea..." I see what you did there. 😉 151
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It's a fun game until you realize your song was "The Ballad of the Green Berets". LOL 031
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 28/09/2026My little downtown apartment doesn't have the freezer space for very much, but it's great to do that when you can. I hope the frozen melon works out, and I hope you like the recipe if you try it. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I like it! It's my second time trying it. The recipe calls it "squidgy" (dense, moist), which is true, but I'm fine with that. It took a few minutes longer to bake in my oven than the recipe called for. The tartness/sweetness of the berries makes a difference, too. 130
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026For those who like to have the recipe. My only variation was using a square pan instead of a round one. www.theguardian.com/food/2026/se... 040

Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 26/09/2026In a series that big, obviously some will be better than others, but on the whole, I enjoyed them. I've read all but "Y", which I have sitting here waiting. It felt unfair that she died before she got to "Z". 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 26/09/2026(Yes, this is the same ship that fatally collided with the Brooklyn Bridge last year. It's been fixed.) 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The Mexican Navy's ship Cuauhtémoc is in town on a goodwill visit. The line to board stretched from Pier 17 to Pier 1, so I didn't bother trying to get on it. But I was happy to see so much goodwill being returned. #SanFrancisco #Mexico 180
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026I'll have to give it a try. I enjoy the genre, and I enjoyed the movie. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026This one had a small fee, but it was worth it. You're right, there are so many opportunities out there for fun and interesting experiences. It's just a matter of looking for them and then actually doing them. 021
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026It had to be renovated after the 1906 quake and fire. The renovation was done by the original architect, Willis Polk, with the assistance of a certain up-and-coming architect named Julia Morgan, who went on to design Hearst's castle, San Simeon. 121
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Today the San Francisco Historical Society offered a self-guided tour of the Financial District with docents stationed at 14 locations. I was already familiar with a lot of it, but it gave me access to places not normally open to the public, like this room at the Merchants Exchange Building. 2150
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I love Ellen Raskin's work. I've been meaning to reread a few of them. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 13/09/2026I was surprised to see that his horse got billed over his wife, but I looked it up and saw that they weren't married yet. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 11/09/2026It's startling to realize that these landmark buildings have been gone just a few years shy of how long they were here. vimeo.com/28171399vimeo.comTwin Tower CameosFrom 1969 to 2001, the Twin Towers made countless cameos in Hollywood films. Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I like Greene mostly, and I've been meaning to try that one. I enjoyed the Caine/Fraser movie version. 110
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 07/09/2026For Labor Day, here's an assortment of pictures from my vintage photo collection. #LaborDay 092
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 06/09/2026There were flashes of his greatness (cinematography, that long take, etc.), so I kept giving it the benefit of the doubt, thinking I may have simply been expecting more of a thriller, but no, in the end I thought it was surprisingly flat. 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 05/09/2026A classic I still haven't read. But I think the cover art is by Tamara de Lempicka, and I did see an exhibit of her art last year. 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 02/09/2026One of my favorites. I actually liked it more on the second viewing because the ending felt less abrupt the second time. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I'm currently working my way through the Maigret series, and am looking forward to exploring his other offerings. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I was once in a play that was a pastiche based largely on "Random Harvest". That makes me curious to see it. But that doesn't really count as a recommendation. LOL 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 30/08/2026For today's book group: coconut cake from my Dolly Parton cookbook. #baking 💙📚🍽️ #DollyParton 0402
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 29/08/2026I'm not really following the trail so much as just crossing them off the list as it's convenient. But at some point I'll need to make a specific effort if I want to do them all. It's not just about seeing the missions, but about visiting towns I might not ordinarily get to. 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 29/08/2026I'm not religious, I just enjoy exploring history/architecture. Plus, I find that working with a list (like all 21 missions) motivates me to get around. For instance, I explored San Francisco by visiting all 28 branches of the library, and California by visiting all 58 counties. 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Great list. I never see ones like "Easy Living" or "Radio Days" on these lists, but they are favorites of mine, too. 130
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 23/08/2026I'm still deciding whether to try to see all the California Missions, but I crossed another one off the list today anyway. This is the one in Santa Clara, my seventh out of twenty-one. #California 1150
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Great list. "Barry Lyndon" is gorgeous. Happy to see somebody listing "Notorious" as their top-ranked Hitchcock. 121

Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Tonight I happened to meet a theater critic who has been very kind in his praise of my work over the years, and it meant more to me than I would have expected to be able to thank him. #theater #theatre 080
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 13/08/2026I thought it was very elegant. There are a number of his works around town, including several within walking distance of that one. I went with a friend, and afterwards, introduced her to three more, including my favorite, "Spire". 120

Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 08/08/2026So challenging to wrap my mind around, but so rewarding once I did. 110
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Oh, what a movie. All the earnest scenes with poor persecuted March and his fellows were so tiresome, while all the supposedly horrifying scenes of debauched rulers and gruesome gladiators were so much fun. 120
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 07/08/2026My first encounter with "Hay Fever" was a stage production that made me laugh so hard I hurt. 020
Matt Weimer @mattweimer.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Theater somehow manages to bring out the best and the worst in us, doesn't it? I used to keep a file of clippings of letters to the editor from performers who were angry about reviews, just to remind myself not to do it. (I didn't, but sometimes barely.) 020
