09 Oct was X (2022). While the core of the movie is a typical slasher, there are several things about it that make it stand out. Stylish cinematography and editing for one, and a variety of troubling questions about generational friction and sex for another. 4/5 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_(2022...

#23 is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) - touching on the regular franchise themes but with additional clarity, highlighting how we're tearing down everything humanity has worked hard to build, and Fiennes' performance with Maiden was a stupendous spectacle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28_Year...

Hah, what a fantastic way of putting it!

Very much an Occam's razor thing, this. It's not "pushing" people to lose social skills but it was absolutely developed by nerds (like me) as a way of socialising without needing to deploy social skills.

Just watched X and I must say I'm very disappointed that Jenny Ortega had "Sunday" written on her pants when it should surely be "Wednesday"

Bat Terror @mattthr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Yeah I mean it works fine as entertainment, which is the point. And, arguably, as a social game too. It's just to nerds like us that it looks weird :) I think it's very telling that the one time they had a game player on, they got voted off fairly early.
010
Bat Terror @mattthr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
As entertainment, yes. But as a game, very much not. In fact to me it's the other way round - allowing them to keep recruitung spoils the premise of the game as a win/lose affair.

Bat Terror @mattthr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Yes, they can just keep recruiting. I know the target can say "no" but given the potential that there number will always be three, it hugely devalues the importance of catching a traitor in the vote

Bat Terror @mattthr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
As a gamer, I continue to find the rules of The Traitors annoying enough that it feels irritating to watch. If the traitors can just recruit someone every time they lose a member, what's the point of voting any of them off?

Iliad, Moytura, Cascadero are all absolutely fresh fantastic games from Bitewing that are not (AFAIK) reprints. They have some others like Spectral & Bebop that are solid. I know those KS games are based on video game titles but they're still novel as tabletop adaptations.

It certainly didn't pull punches, and I'll say that it's the best film in that franchise by a good way, too.

I don't quite know what's gone on here but I'd "saved" that post and the block means the saved post is now just vanished? Never entirely understood the BS meta-block thing. Feels like one of those features that's great until it isn't.

Oh god, this movie is mostly rubbish but the final scenes are so utterly horrible that it's inscribed on my memory forever.

Bitewing is doing some phenomenal stuff at the moment. It's up there with CMYK, Leder and (presumably) Buried Giant in terms of releasing consistently interesting stuff while other publishers are mostly falling back on tried, tested and rather boring formulas in the face of economic uncertainty

#24 is The Exorcist (1973) - It's aged, but remains a case study in just how sinister you can make a film with great lighting, great sound, and pea soup. Remains shocking because of the awful indignities it inflicts on a child & its various symbolisms of puberty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Exo...

But if we excluded from polite and professional society everybody who posted misogynist or other bigoted opinions online we'd... hmm... actually probably be a lot better off as a society and lose nothing of any real value.

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

There's an old saw about how having a hammer makes everything look like nails which, if applied to the AI industry, would have them advocating hammers for heart surgery. Just total brain rot.

Back in 1985 there was an offical AD&D "soundtrack" called First Quest. It came with an adventure for high-level characters on the LP/tape insert and the idea was you could use the music as a soundtrack for the adventure. Both were terrible. www.retroist.com/p/dungeons-a...

Also, why do people only eat whole potatoes in Wiltshire? Because they've got no Devizes for Chippenham.

There's an apocryphal tale of an American who stopped for directions in a local garage who said he was lost as all the local place names were the same. He'd driven through Chippenham, Chipping Sodbury, and then three tiny villages called Loose Chippings.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried gluing the key back on but it just isn't stable and I'm not sure why - I feel I'm missing some understanding of how these keyboards are built/work?

#25 is Dawn of the Dead (2004) - The remake has lost any kind of metaphorical take on consumerism. But hot damn it proves a great launch pad for mindless action horror, with ultra violent thrill rides bookending some bleak, slower burning chills. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_of...
