Perth, Western Australia. Want to connect to people interested in talking about the climate catastrophe hurtling towards us. Also starting an association with the goal of trying to do something about it from a community driven and bottom up approach.

The federal government appears to be taking no action whatsoever regarding the report, and it is being ignored by media. That leaves you, me and all of us to take responsibility for ourselves. There's no one coming to save us. Its up to us to start building these new political institutions now.

Instead, they outlined how, in order to start to deal with climate change, increasing levels of governance must be placed directly into the communities themselves; where a multi level approach needs to be taken with community integration that must go beyond mere consultation periods.

Are you concerned that the Australian government isn't doing nearly enough to prevent or prepare for climate change? You're not alone. In fact, the Australian Climate Service released a technical report on governance in 2025 which outlined how existing political institutions are not capable here.

Instead, the report argues that governance must be integrated directly into communities and operated in a multi level way in which it currently is not. The federal government does not appear to be taking any actions on this report. That leaves you, me and all of us to do it for ourselves.

This sort of standardisation has the potential to so great harm. It also has the potential to just self destruct these institutions. If, for example, a government legislative body just starts outputting the same things a teenager in their room can with an anthropic subscription. Wrote about it here.

The last time el nino was anywhere close to this, 50 million people died from famine. This el nino is much worse. Its not clear if global food systems are more secure than they were then. Possibly. Its the poorest countries that will likely have it worst. But yes, I've been growing my veggies.

I'd recommend more people read the Australian Climate Service report on governance. My own reading of the report indicates to me that they are highlighting the current governmental practices in Australia as a risk factor in climate change. They recommend more community integrated governance.

Though the impression given is often the opposite. Settler colonialism is defined by genocide in a way that more common forms of colonialism are not. Though it's worth noting the UN definition was designed to avoid acknowledging these forms of genocide.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know of no empirical published research about the coming AI doom. There's just no equivalence to the thousands of published empirical research around climate change. Very weird statement for that person to make.

For me, one of the more disturbing aspects of our society is how much we tolerate and accept the mass psychological manipulation of our children by large corporate interests. This often comes in the form of regular advertising targeted at children, or these sorts of outreach programs.

That's cool. I'd love to hear more about how that got started. But you're right, housing regulations, despite whatever good intentions behind them, can create problems here. I think at least adobe houses are legal in most of Australia?

Matt @mattshr.selfhosted.social · 30/09/2026
I always come back to housing cooperatives or community land trust type systems as a meaningful way to solve this. But they require extremely large initial capital investments to get going. So I end up at a loss of what to do. But a lesser approach can be community wealth distribution systemsm.

I've more often seen Albanese talk about the "rules based order" than "international law". A common occurrence for many in that professional environment. "Rules based order" of course being a euphemism for US hegemony. Something quite distinct from international law. Which term does he use here?

I've seen little commentary on how global government intervention on age verification has created a new market of digital id facilitators, nor the dangers posed by government mandated digital ID being handled by private market forces.

Matt @mattshr.selfhosted.social · 29/09/2026
I get the sense that the problem goes deeper than that. The legal definition of genocide is itself watered down relative to its original meaning that included forms of destruction of indigenous cultures. It seems law here places too much weight on intent, and not enough on predictable outcomes.

I think acknowledging this -- that there is no real line between humans and the natural world -- is key to our future well being. Regenerative agroforestry is just the act of acknowledging this and implementing managed natural biospheres so that they that produce food and other benefits for humans.

Matt @mattshr.selfhosted.social · 28/09/2026
The idea of a natural wilderness, as somehow independent of human intervention, is a bit of an illusion. In Australia, the "bush" is a product of tens of thousands of years of human intervention and management. We're even learning the amazon rainforest is likely a result of this intervention. (1/2)

I don't think existing government institutions are going to save us at all. But I do think the tax reforms introduced, both the stage three tax cuts on lower and middle income and the more recent tax increases on speculative asset trading are revolutionary within that limited framework.

James C Scott suggested that one possible way in which states may have formed is as protectionist rackets demanding tribute. Normalised with time. Also St Augustine's tale of the emperor who asks the pirate "how dare he molest the sea" "how dare you molest the whole world" replies the pirate.

But it's fairly simply to start growing such a Commons today. Just start implementing these practices on your verge or with a bit of guerilla gardening. Trying to engage your local council can also be useful, but should not define the means or ends. Useful resources might be found here.

If regenerative agroforestry began to be practiced on all the public park and verge spaces we'd effectively be able to create a food abundance not reliant on any fragile logistics systems. The historical reasons this does not exist today is complex. Put simply; abundance is not profitable.

It is. I pretty much accept at this point that there's going to be a significant decline/collapse of human civilization. But I also see hope to grow new and better institutions in the cracks, which can then grow into the chasms and so on. Its not going to be easy.

It's also just how agriculture functioned around much of the world in indigenous and european areas alike in the 18th century before being destroyed by enclosure of the commons. industrial agriculture seems to have been resting on the laurels of this managed biodiversity and soil health.

Regenerative agroforestry is an important part of a decent and dignified future. It's a form of agriculture that's highly resistant to climate change and creates huge positive externalities. Here's my experiment at home. Broad beans, apple tree, mandarin tree, in ground worm farm all interacting.
Example of home agroforestry. In ground worm farm, fruit trees, broad beans. All interacting and working together to cover each others weaknesses.

I don't believe there is any legal or moral precedent that suggests LLMs are able of taking responsibility for anything. I appreciate here that ABC has said OpenAI hack. OpenAI is the responsible party. Not the AI agent. Though their byline needs to be updated it seems.

I don't disagree. Just some additional information. The arrest warrant was issued by the ICC, which is technically independent of the UN. This assembly was held the US. The US is not party to the ICC. So the problem here, as usual, is more the US. Not the UN.

Its further unclear as to whether the only source of this is openAI or if a breach has been independently confirmed. It could just be another one of openAIs hoaxes. The last one being where they claimed their model had independently solved a millennium prize.

I find it disturbing that albanese here appears to apply responsibility for these acts onto the AI agent itself, and not OpenAI who designed and deployed it. The moral and legal precedents here are fairly clear I think. AI agents are not capable of holding any responsibility. OpenAI is responsible.
