“This final disruption gives us a small way to learn from the past—to just look at all of it; to try to find meaning as we can, and to hope for better results when we chisel our own runes onto rocks.” Matthew Schratz revisits “Oh Pure and Radiant Heart.”

How do we make meaning from history? Lydia Millet’s 2005 novel “Oh Pure and Radiant Heart” offers a path forward when history “means too much.”

“The novel forces us to contemplate the gap between the meaning of three nice men who want the world to forswear nuclear weapons, and three men who brought about a world in which a relatively small number of atoms can reduce cities to nearly nothing.”

I try not to be hyperbolic but this is the single worst comic I have ever seen in my entire life.
Comic that says Literature Class in a Nutshell. Panel 1) "What the author means" and Edgar Allan Poe saying "I love ravens" with heart bubble. 2) "What the student bullshits" Student in class saying "The raven is a bird."

3) What the teacher explains "Wrong the raven represents despair, remorse, etc." and Poe screaming at the teacher.

fights about whether gen x is cool, or millennials are the only legitimately sad people, or whatever, remind me of a reading group where we talked about malcolm harris's theory of millennials in KIDS THESE DAYS for like an hour; and we noticed that my adviser had not said anything (1/2)

The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again. This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

the iliad is useful for understanding people who have so much money that they don't really face consequences like a normal person. elon musk acts like zeus if zeus were pretty stupid--he does not think of himself as constrained, or mortal, so he makes problems for mortals to see what will happen

people who teach: are your students not finding things funny? i have taught edith wharton and borges in the last two weeks, and i think that a lot of what they write is extremely funny; and the students do not (this is not a complaint about them, funniness is in the eye of the reader, just curious)

Hear me out — If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is. Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.
