I’m introducing a moratorium on our government’s use of facial recognition technology with Senator Markey. Every American deserves a reasonable expectation of privacy. We need to stop the constant, nonconsensual state of surveillance.
The image features an announcement discussing a proposed ban on government use of facial recognition technology by Jayapal and Markey. Text highlights concerns about the technology's unregulated use, potential for misidentifying individuals, and related civil rights violations.

This is an absolutely catastrophic data breach of an identity verification vendor 150+ million drivers license scans that includes photos, address, license numbers etc. It includes Pete Hegseth, security researchers, and even the deputy director of the FBI. krebsonsecurity.com/2026/09/fbi-...
A screenshot of a search result on a website titled "NEXUS | Identity Document Database" showing a locked Minnesota driver's license record for "PETER HEG******." A driver's license portrait of Peter Hegseth appears on the left, next to mostly redacted information fields, including ID number, birth date (1980), and address, followed by a prompt to purchase the full record for $100.00.

Here's some more good news from today's hearing: it seems like the SCREEN ACT totally failed. This was one of the most dangerous bills being considered: it would have created an Internet-wide ID check regime that would be a censorship and surveillance nightmare for marginalized communities.

The under-16 social media ban and the rise of “show me your papers” internet
There's a small indie game from 2013 that I think about often. In Lucas Pope's Papers, Please you play an immigration inspector at the border of the gloriously miserable communist republic of Arstotzka, and your entire job is to scrutinise documents. Passport here, entry permit there. Does the photo match the face? Does the date of birth line up across the forms?
