Someone in our Chicago neighborhood is not happy that you stole their spider plant.
Do you know the plant thief? Dear plant thief: Karma is real. Karma is my boyfriend and he's gonna find you. Stealing plants is small-D energy. (or loose purse) Shame, shame plant thief!! May the fleas of 1,000 camels infest your armpits.

Congrats to the first MLB pitcher from the state of Oaxaca. Rodriguez attended the Oaxacan baseball academy I wrote about for @nytimes.com years ago. None of the young men at the academy were from Oaxaca at that point. He joins Vinny Castilla and Geronimo Gil as the only Oaxacan MLB players.

At an invitation-only gathering in Italy, white supremacists mapped out strategies to target rural America while local press coverage vanishes www.confrontthehate.com/p/white-nati...
As economic pressures gut local newsrooms across the country, white nationalist figures see an untapped opening: stepping into media deserts where there are few journalists left to sound the alarm.

“Local media has been dying all over America, which means that there’s essentially no real way to hold local governments accountable—and they can do whatever they want,” Kevin DeAnna told an invitation-only gathering of approximately 50 white nationalists in Rome.

Breaking into a broad smile, he excitedly added: “You should be fantasizing about this. This is a good thing.”

I'm covering an event in an office overlooking the Bean and Millennium Park. The lake would ordinarily be beautiful from this window, but today you can't even see it.

So while I'd like to provide readers with more eviction coverage, @cccourtclerk.bsky.social doesn't want the public to know about this data. That's particularly frustrating as rent continues to climb in Chicago and unhoused people are forced to live in bus shelters and parks. 6/6

The clerk's office has stopped responding to my inquiries. Because the courts are not covered by FOIA laws, they're allowed to simply ignore requests for taxpayer-funded information. 5/6

Now here it is in late June and I have not received basic information from the court, more than four months later. Winter turned into spring a month after I submitted the request, and now it's summer. 4/6

In April I realized I hadn't received the data, so I reached out to the clerk's office to ask about it. They said they never received the request, which is an easy claim to dispute because of email receipts. 3/6

In February of this year I requested additional data through the end of 2025. The chief judge of Cook County signed off on the request, ruling it was public information. I sent the judge's approval to the clerk's office. @cccourtclerk.bsky.social 2/6

A thread on FOIA limitations: Last month I wrote this story for Block Club Chicago, based on my records request for eviction data in the Chicago area. The court handed over data through last fall, but refused to answer basic questions about it. 1/6
