World cup meets world maps: a risograph print of a standard football pattern distorted using different map projections. (yes, I know projections are flat but I like that the shading implies they've been reinflated into the most unusable balls)
A risograph-printed poster showing a standard football pattern distorted by seven map projections. The text is printed in black and the pattern in fluorescent orange. A detailed view of the risograph printing textures scanned at high resolution.

Nice to see the NYTimes combine the two things I care about most — housing reform & data journalism! Interesting policy debates are happening in MA. Happy to have played a small part with my analysis work for @cambridgemass.bsky.social supporting multifamily housing legalization across the city.

Something a little more experimental this morning — exploring how to make potato plan-style maps on the web using d3.js. Map below shows land cover in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area (aggregated and 🥔-fied). observablehq.com/@mpkhinda/d3... #dataviz #geospatial #minnesota
A blobby map in the style of a "potato plan" showing a semi-abstract representation of land cover around the Minnesota St.Paul area. Roads are overlaid as thin black lines that provide the map structure. A legend along the top reads the land cover classes (Open Water, Developed, Open Space, Developed, Low Intensity, Developed, Medium Intensity, Developed, High Intensity, Barren Land, Deciduous Forest, Evergreen Forest, Mixed Forest”, Shrub/Scrub, Grassland/Herbaceous, Pasture/Hay, Cultivated Crops, Woody Wetlands, Herbaceous Wetlands).

At most NYC agencies, the gap between the highest and lowest paid full-time employee grew between 2015 to 2025. It's most pronounced at agencies with high overtime pay. Who knew you could make almost $650k as a marine engineer at DOT? observablehq.com/@mpkhinda/ny...
An arrow chart showing pay disparity ratio (highest paid employee/lowest paid employee) at 140 NYC agencies from 2015 to 2025. x-axis is payroll size (log scale) and y-axis is ratio of highest-to-lowest pay. Each arrow tracks one agency's change, red for growing inequality, blue for shrinking. Most arrows point up. DOT is the extreme outlier at a ratio of 19, driven by a Chief Marine Engineer who made $646k. NYCHA, DOC, and FDNY also stand out at the high end. Board of Correction is the only notable decrease.

Fall foliage in Prospect Park. Trees colored by species from the Prospect Park Tree Survey, canopy and topography from LiDAR. Made as a housewarming gift for a friend who just moved near the park.
A detailed map of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY showing individual trees colored by species at peak fall foliage. Topographic contour lines and tree canopy shading add texture. Colors range from deep red and pink to orange and yellow.

Matt’s notebook compares 311 service requests and DOT pothole work orders (from opendata.cityofnewyork.us) to explore the decline in overall pothole reports; the seasonality; the geographic distribution; and the first 100 days of the last three mayors. observablehq.com/@mpkhinda/ny...

Almost 10,000 steps, lots of turns, and weird looks from strangers. 2/10 wouldn’t recommend.
A screenshot from the Strava app showing a walking route that matches the random walk gif in the quoted post. Stats: 5.95 miles, 1 hour 26 minutes and 21 seconds of moving time at a 14:30 minute mile pace.

My top theory is that the 50 day bump reflects a re-certification deadline for landlords that didn't fix things correctly the first time. Maybe someone closer to NYC housing enforcement or tenant advocacy might know more. Data for anyone curious to explore: data.cityofnewyork.us/Housing-Deve...

NYC housing violations must be resolved in 24 hours to 90 days based on severity. HPD data show the true timelines: Heat/hot water gets fixed fastest, mold drags on for months, and most categories have a second spike at 50 days. Any insight or ideas why? observablehq.com/@mpkhinda/hmc-violations
Ridgeline chart showing the number of days to resolution for 18 NYC housing violation categories. Three dashed lines mark legal deadlines at 24 hours, 30 days, and 90 days. Most categories show peaks near 50 days. Mold takes longest. Heat and hot water issues are resolved fastest.

Mayor Mamdani's "Pothole Politics" made headlines at his 100 day address. Here's what the data show behind the slogan: Potholes are down long term but stubborn. Blitzes made a dent but need to be sustained. Geographic spread seems broad not targeted. observablehq.com/@mpkhinda/nyc-pothole-politics
Bar chart showing daily pothole work orders closed over the first 100 days of different NYC mayoral administrations. Mayor Mamdani's pothole blitzes are clearly visible as spikes in the data.
