I'm immensely proud to announce that my texture library that's been in the making for nearly a decade is now available on my itchio store for indie devs to purchase commercial licenses. makkon.itch.io

Apparently there's a HUGE backup of JAZ drives that were recently put on the Internet Archive. One of them (at least) includes the original Maya 3D models used in the The Iron Giant.

Great, thanks for the quick reply. I visited the store but was confused that it's offline with a message about reopening in 2023!

Oh cool, thanks for the update. There's so much amazing stuff this year for Quake's anniversary, it's hard to keep track of!

I've completely missed out on this. Will there ever be a reprint for UK buyers? The only copies left for sale are for US customers only.

I'm curious about this. I can't find any info about this release other than the announcement on Slipseer. Was it released? I can find Sewer Jam 1 and 2, but no 3?

Oh my. What a mess. I hope eventually that common sense will prevail and that all the public domain art that was previously locked away behind that system will eventually be put back online with universal access.

Right. So many games just shouldn't be games. Still Wakes the Deep another case in point. Annoyed the hell out of me as an interactive experience. Would have been much better as a film.

Unbelievable that's Quake! You've outdone yourself. I'm so looking forward to this, thank you.

This is exactly the kind of thing I pictured at the announcement. Looks fantastic, I can't wait to play it.

Chatham Historic dockyard is akways fascinating. Did you know it has the longest preserved and still working ropery in the world? The 346 metre long building has made hundreds of thousands of miles of rope for centuries. I got these snaps at the weekend.

Co-pilot is down and it's perplexing to see many colleagues now unable to do their jobs. I don't use AI tools, so I'm completely unaffected. Amazing that we've fallen so far, so fast.

Yes, exactly. The constant updates are overwhelming and a tonne sink. Unless it contains a breaking bug, the current version I'm using still works so I'll use that thanks very much! After a 30+ year digital career I'm ready to ditch it all, it's just noise and exhausting frustration now.

At work we've been through a very long MoG (Machinery of Government) change which includes switching from Google to Microsoft at enterprise level. It's been an absolute nightmare and coupled with the push to using AI, the whole thing has really soured my relationship with digital tech.

Oh my, yes, I feel your pain! It's got so bad hasn't it? My day job requires all sorts of daily logins and 2FA all day long and it drives me nuts. I really miss the days I could just turn on the computer and get to work...

Are you getting any rendering anomalies with things off grid? When I've tried it I often see incomplete light maps or strange texture corruption.

As many others have pointed out, one way to think about what’s been happening to tech—software, especially—is that the entire industry is being “Boeinged” (or Jack Welched). And, as with an airplane, a faulty part can sit in a system for a decade before it snaps and brings the whole thing down.

We have a family holiday to Crete in two weeks, but I feel very uncomfortable about it. It doesn't feel right given the situation. But if we don't go and instead obtain a refund (itself unlikely), removing tourism money from a country that depends on it doesn't seem right either.

By the way, I wanted to say how gorgeous that Halloween start map is in Snack Pack 3. One of the prettiest Quake levels with a really consistent theme, great brush work, fabulous lighting, and complete mastery of Makkon textures (I love the little chapel). It oozes class, fantastic work!

Ah great, thanks, I was hoping it was something straightforward like that. While I am happy to usually delve into code for other projects, Quake C is not something I want to learn so I'm glad to avoid it in this case. Thanks for the reply.

I empathise, I'm in the same headspace a lot recently. I've been trying the trick that we can apparently reprogram ourselves just by *acting like* "a person who is more positive" or whatever it is we want to be/do. I'm having some (slow) results! Perhaps it'll work for you?

@strideh.bsky.social Hey, hope you're well. A quick Quake question: I'm still a mapping noob, and wanted to re-create something like the pumpkin counter you made for the start map of Snack Pack 3. Is that all in-map, or does it need new Quake C? Thanks!

What the article should also mention is the chronic failure of the water companies to do their job. I'm convinced that if they'd been investing properly, fixing leaks and building more storage, all that excess rain over winter would not have been lost and we'd have a better buffer against drought.
020
Matt Hill @matthill.co · 29/07/2026
The article does say "While droughts happen naturally, scientists say that climate change is raising the risks, with higher summer temperatures drying out soils more quickly." It's not much, I agree, but it's incorrect to state that climate change isn't mentioned.

They survived because humans put a ton of resources into ensuring their survival. It's a great travesty that hundreds of other species weren't cute enough to get the same investment.

As I get older the thing I think is most important to humans as a species is our relationship to one another and to nature. Everything else is secondary. This is fundamental to our survival as individuals and as a species. Call me an old hippy if you like.
