Europe can do frontier AI. Just look at FLUX by Black Forest Labs. They just released a SOTA video model, right out of Schwarzwald. Insane work! bfl.ai/blog/flux-3-...

Social security is national competence under the Treaties and the EU budget must balance. Would be great to do, but not possible if the EU is not more integrated.

Despite what people usually post online: EU regulatory complexity stems not from member-state rules being worse than US ones, but from the lack of harmonisation between them. Recommend reading this: www.abnamro.com/research/en/...

The EU legally can’t do that, welfare is run by the member states, and most of them do it more efficiently than the US anyway: universal coverage, lower admin costs, better poverty reduction. Just look at healthcare cost.

I dont get the centralised social systems part though. What do you mean?

I agree on optimism and capital markets (which is the biggest problem in Europe imho) and again is a problem of fragmentation. The money would be there.

Matthias Neumayer @matthiasneumayer.com · 17/07/2026
General laws and regulations? They are scattered across the states. The story that there is less bureaucracy in the US is not necessarily true. Yes easier for employment, definitely not everywhere. In some parts the EU is way more harmonised and has more legal certainty

I generally agree with many of your points, though there is also no unified European migration policy. Spain is profiting now massively from migration, also economically. We compare Europe as a whole, yet we are extremely fragmented. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Which things? Despite gdp which of course is important, but for the vast majority of every other measure is way better in Europe. Not saying there are no problems, but there is more euro doomerism, than we deserve. Economic growth in the US now comes only from AI.

Europe v America: Who’s Really Winning?

„America has faster growth measured in base-year prices, but the relative size of the economies measured at PPP doesn’t change[…]When comparing the US and the EU, uncritical use of real GDP numbers can lead to the conclusion that Europe is getting poorer relative to America. But it isn’t.“

Why the „Europe is falling behind“ narrative is just bullshit. The American economist and Nobel prize winner Paul Krugman shared a great piece on this.

Guter Artikel.
