I think I’ve finally realized just how dense some people are. They couldn’t grasp that the easiest way to compare crime in two different sized cities is to calculate a rate per capita. You know, like a homicide rate… x per 100,000 population. (Not talking about students)

The conflation of slave catching and modern policing is not supported by historical evidence. Urban policing predates American slave catching - no matter how angry that fact makes you or what you want to be true (“…but Harvard professor says…”). Policing owns its racist faults without this.

Never under any circumstances should taxpayers support private schools. Private schools (no matter what kind) hurt public schools. They concentrate disadvantaged, while concentrating privilege and a culture of exclusion.

As a criminologist I understand there are people who cannot be returned to society under any circumstances. That said, I can’t think of a way killing people - even horrible ones - makes us better. My partner, Det. Kevin Collins, was murdered. My seat is right down front. Where the blood & tears are.

In preparing a lecture about the Maoist Revolution in Nepal, I came upon an odd parallel with US politics. Like Maoists, MAGA see themselves as a kind of everyman, peasant revolt against urban elites; paradoxically, MAGA also see themselves as Chiang Kai-shek, fighting against the Communists.

This is why I will never teach in Arkansas. People really don’t understand how terrible it is for most non-tenure track folks. I’m lucky with my SUNY gig, but the vast majority of us are not. They are desperate and poor. Stress disorders, depression, substance abuse, and suicide are all too common.
