She sang across the heavens. In that song he took her, felt her body, and laid her down upon the cold and cruel ground before they warmed it together. His friends insisted that there was no woman on the moon, but he saw the lies in their eyes. He knew she waited for him. He studied for years to learn how to reach her. When finally he used forbidden knowledge to climb atop the stair of clouds, he found her in the court ivory pillars. We met late one night, and I thought I could take you home, maybe show you my childhood bedroom. But the edges inside were jagged, and you’d barely entered before you cut your feet on the glass littering the doorway. You left red stains as you exited, and I still look at them to remember you. It’s the closest thing to your presence I have.
