I promised the elder child I'd take her to a game this year, this is great, maybe they'll be giving tickets away by Christmas!

I suspect "those people" just haven't found it yet. Give them an hour or two...

We have an electric vehicle and commute by bike and transit, what bribe do we get to lower our family expenses? I guess it's a game of one-upmanship on blowing out the provincial finances after yesterday's buck-a-beer ripoff. #bcpoli

My daughters would probably want to ask what your favorite rock is, they still know you as daddy's rock loving friend.

If a pipeline was going to be a profitable investment, the private sector would be lining up to pay for it. So now we have to bribe both Quebec and Alberta to keep the country together? #cdnpoli

I just received an email inviting me to be a paid BC Conservative door knocker. Yes, they're throwing money at astroturfing support. I wonder if it will be appropriately recorded in campaign expenses. (of course I'm not interested, or maybe I go get paid and talk shit instead)

The wiggling around of the numbers and relatively low sample numbers, it very likely it comes down to who responds. I just did a Leger this morning, I almost didn't bother opening the email. I can also see Cons being more enthusiastic to respond right now, but maybe that's me projecting hope.

So I assume all these residential school deniers are hard at work today, not expecting any extra pay, because there's nothing to memorialize today, right?

I hope so. Hell, I'm tempted to try and stir up some "they're not real conservatives!!1!" trouble online with a new account. 😜

I mean, this is exactly what I expected to happen earlier. The KLF issue momentarily derailed it. But we always knew the adults were going to come in and take back over the dominant right of centre party.

I have a feeling no tax only on Canadian liquor would be illegal under various trade agreements, not allowing us to treat domestic products differently. #bcpoli

This is all feeling familiar. In 2005 I was campaign chair for the CentreBC-type wannabe centrist party, except with the Milobar-esqe right wingers still onboard. We too had one MLA. It didn't go well. #bcpoli

Depending how strong the "principles" of some of these Conservative candidates are, if they win I can see us back at the polls within a year. #bcpoli

And the reason I have this at my fingertips is because I was snooping through my father's inbox this weekend looking for someone's address, and came across an old email from a manager at a certain rapid transit agency. 😂

The lack of a homogeneous fleet with different train lengths and door placements make that challenging. I have also heard that structural reinforcements would be needed to the stations to allow for this. And some control system upgrades. It's all about as financially prudent as fare gates were.

So far week two of the election campaign is feeling pretty boring, I'm not sure if that is good or bad.

You mean without actual people engaging and continuing to answer new questions, global public knowledge will go stale. Of course most of us are probably guilty of this.

Tomato, zucchini, and squash haul have been crap this year, but the peppers aren't doing bad. I still have about this many more on the plant. These will be perfect for fajitas tonight.

My wife said the same thing. But it definitely illustrates the lack of access to the poor floor of that mall, one escalator, one pair of elevators down to the hole with Safeway and BC Liquor.

Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 28/09/2026
Exactly, their patrons would never slum it walking down stairs.

I don't know who's running Oakridge Mall but... A broken escalator is stairs. They are stairs. For random strangers, we all looked at each other confused, and just moved the barrier.

What's hilarious is their paranoid constitution, which I knew would exist. ReformBC had similar clauses about leadership because at the core, none of these right wingers trust each other, which says a lot. They tried to push similar clauses during merger talks, always ways to depose leaders. #bcpoli

The Premier is the person who holds the confidence of the majority of MLAs, regardless of party. Having said that, there could be yet another skism and multiple groups running to the LG claiming they hold the confidence of the Legislature.

Just received permission to order a new machine, it means my team will have 4x A6000 Ada w 48GB vram each and 2x A6000 Blackwell w 96GB vram each. That's a lot of GPU capacity.

They had all fully drunk the Kool-Aid, voting against their own self-interest because of some weird ideology left over from the Reagan era. This is who we're dealing with in the BC Conservative party, I know them, they won't be happy until their libertarian paradise and everything is dismantled. 3/3

Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 25/09/2026
I keep trying to figure out how he thought it was going to benefit him, everything he was pushing to dismantle would have been a negative for him personally. The AGM was full of these people, the same kind who voted for the orange turd these days. 2/3

Who are these far-right kooks? Back when I played provincial politics and we were merging with ReformBC, one of the executive of that party was a retail salesperson at a BC based drug & elx chain, he was fully on board with privatized and deregulate everything. #bcpoli 1/3

I've said similar before, anytime there is even a little pushback from the right he cowers and gives in.

Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 23/09/2026
I think after this stupid election, assuming we can hold off the right-wing hordes trying to drag us backwards and tear everything down, I (and others) need to get back involved with internal NDP politics and try to turf Eby. #bcpoli
311
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 23/09/2026
I think it's going to come down to candidate nominations. A short writ might actually work against Eby. CentreBC and OneBC need time to fill out their rosters if they're going to effectively split the right wing vote. Or I guess as long as they get candidates in some key ridings. #bcpoli
010
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 23/09/2026
Reading some comments, do we have another Wilson and PDA or Falcon and United situation? Did Milobar actually get control of CentreBC? I assume when he resigned he lost control, he can't block endorsements for candidates. #bcpoli
000
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 22/09/2026
And here we fucking go, this stupid election blowing up in Eby's face. Sources tell CBC News a deal has been reached to have MLAs currently with CentreBC merge with Conservative Party MLAs, a move to unite candidates to Eby's political right.
000
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 22/09/2026
I think you misunderstand, I am a NDP-Green leftie type, when I say risk, I mean risk to the NDP. 😂 And even Eby has gone way too right for me.
110
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 22/09/2026
That is probably the biggest risk is we'll have what happened in the last election, the unknown brand name party will pull back and take the attitude they will take over the brand name party after the election, as the Falcon-types tried unsuccessfully last time.
101
Matthew Laird @matthewlaird.ca · 22/09/2026
One thing going for Eby is if you think the Cons will fold into CentreBC to unite the right, I'd put money against that. They are the die hard kooks who will field a full slate even if they have to grab people off street corners. And they have the brand name. That confusion might be enough. #bcpoli

Twenty years ago as a mainly NDP/Green type I was not happy & distrustful sitting across a table from ReformBC. But we also had a First Nations founded party at the table too. For the current combatants, red Tory-racist Tory, unfortunately they might have an easier time finding a temporary alliance.
