Can think of one job interview where I should have arrived with an iced coffee/knickerbocker glory/Asterix-style roast boar if only to distract from the fact I'd just been caught in a biblical downpour with no brolly and was completely sodden from head to toe.

Saw and heard loads of these beauts (nutcrackers) on holiday. Maybe the iconic sound of the alps/dolomites for me (ahead of cowbells, marmot whistles, and the satisfying bloop upon ingress to the chairlifts).

Last full day here, last hut - the Ütia Forcelles. Maybe the best of the lot. Lunch involved turtres, a local specialty somewhat like fried crispy ravioli. Don't want to come home
A restaurant with a sunny outdoor terrace perched on the side of a mountainTwo bulbous fried pastry things stuffed with green spinach and cheese sitting on a napkin on a plateMore blue skies, green trees, big spiky mountainsA grassy meadow dotted with little huts, leading into a stretch of forest giving way to a steep mountain face

Was reminded of this (from Hazlitt's The Fight) by the general vibe yesterday when everyone came outside enthusiastically clutching their colanders
We are cold to others only when we are dull in ourselves, and have neither thoughts nor feelings to impart to them. Give a man a topic in his head, a throb of pleasure in his heart, and he will be glad to share it with the first person he meets.

from Thurber, The Wonderful O
...make out her name," said Littlejack. "How is she called?"

"The Aeiu," said Black.

"A weird, uncanny name," the sailor said. "It sounds a little like a night bird screaming."

"It's all the vowels except the O," Black said. "I've had a hatred of that letter ever since the night my mother became wedged in a porthole. We couldn't pull her in and so we had to push her out." He shuddered and his eyes turned hard. "What is the name of this island?" he asked, shaking off the thought of O.

"Ooroo," said Littlejack, and once more the other shuddered.
